The trim above my side windows, below the roof, is worn off. There is metal showing and a little rust. Is there anything I can do to fix this? or do I need to have a body shop look at it? Here is picture of what I'm talking about. It runs from front to back only on the driver side.

 

Did you have somebody "detail" your MINI? This looks like the result of somebody buffing the roof and melting the plastic gutter. Black Wow and Pre-Wow might be able to improve this, but otherwise, I'd look into replacing it..I don't think it costs very much. No need to visit the body shop, just get replacement parts.

 

I've never had the car detailed but I've only it a little over a month. I could picture someone damaging it with a buffer like you suggested.
Do you know where I could learn how to replace the trim? I'm not even sure what words to use to search for a replacement.
