The Prima product called Cosmonot was made specifically for the removal of cosmoline and it works great! Also, I've heard paint thinner works too but never tried it.
I bought a bottle of Cosmoline and it does work but wow the bottles are way too big. I did the whole MINI and probably used a tablespoon's worth. The Cosmoline doesn't harm the paint under the 'bonnet' which is not clear-coated

On a cool engine, spray down the hole engine (minus some critical parts) with Purple Power (cleaner/degreaser) and let it sit for about 10-15 min then spray off with a hose on shower setting.

Making sure it completely dries out before starting car again.

Thoughts?
Be careful with the Purple Power (or anything similar) it is strong stuff, be sure to dilute it or it might strip the paint as there is no clear coat in the engine bay.

Cleaning motor compartment

I just used Griots engine bay cleaner and dressing and the results are fantastic! I sprayed the entire compartment on a cold motor including the bottom of the hood and let it sit for about 5 minutes, then hosed it off with cold water. I drove it for a day to make certain all was dry and when it was cool sprayed on the aerosol dressing, (using maybe a 1/4 of the can, I did not overspray by any means and only wiped down the underneath of the hood, everything now looks better than new!

Look in the engine bay..anything that looks electrical...has exposed windings etc... don't get water there.

The alternator is in the same place as the first gen...just lower. On my R55, looking at the left side of the engine (passenger side) below and to the lower right of the dipstick are copper windings.

Oh...so its tucked away !! I guess.. I will not be spraying the engine bay with water..cuz that alternator looks so far down to get covered with some plastic!! I don't know if my hand will fit down there to cover it!! maybe the engine bay will just get a sponge bath!!
thanks : )
