Removing the arch plastic
Removing the arch plastic
Hi all,
I was just curious, but is it OK to remove the arch trim when I do my detailing? I've seen people mask, and I've seen hints on cleaning, but is it safe just to pull them off while polishing/waxing? Would there be any long term effects from doing them a few times a year? Seems they would be easier to clean anyhow.
And you can just pull them off, right?
Thanks

I was hoping someone would have provided instruction on this one, as I need to figure out how to tighten mine down. The front arch, on the passenger side particularly, seems to be coming loose and I'd like to remedy that.
As for removal when detailing, I recommend getting a synthetic polish that wont negatively affect the plastic trim. The "Ice" line from Turtle Wax works really well. In fact I picked up the whole shabang to include the wash formula, polish compound and spray detailer; add in some microfiber and you are good to go
It actually beautifies the plastic trim parts, but it (the wax) is not recommended for use on the glass for some reason.

Try this thread. Sounds like the clips holding them break and need replacement if removed.

If you're ok with clips replacement costs, then yea you can just pull them off(just be careful along the ends that are connected to the side skirts since the side skirts overlap the arches). They're not too costly(at about $1.10 for each clip-you'll need about 5 or 6 for each arch) but overall it'll be quite a bit of change ~$20+. The whole residual wax is the very reason why I painted the trim/arches. Now I have no worries! :D

As has already been said, removing the arches to wax the car really isn't desirable..maybe once a year to wash the dust buildup underneath it, but doing it regularly isn't such a good idea. To prevent getting wax on the arches either wipe more carefully when you get close to the arches, tape them (highly recommended when using a random orbital), or use the Masking Card like for Black Wow. Take a piece of thin cardboard like an index card and use it as a barrier to prevent getting wax on the arches.
