blob removal the wrong way

I bought my car used and there has been this chip above the driver's door handle that someone filled with a glob of touch up. It's always bugged me and I'm getting pretty good at this detailing so i figured I would sand it down and polish it out a bit better. I taped around the owie as to not do more than necessary , soaked my 1500 and 2000 grit , put the paper on the end of a pencil eraser. S*** that was 800 grit burned through the clear, color right under the chip. By the way the chip doesn't look much better either.

Any tips, or should I just leave it alone?

Also, I have about 4 coats of banana gloss on it now applied about a week apart and it stands out in a parking lot like you wouldn't believe.

looks like someone knicked the paint with their key while opening the
door, huh?

i would touch it up and let dry about a week, retry with 1500grit.

Nice BG shine! You might want to look at Langka which allows you to blob the touch-up paint and then remove it flush to the rest of the finish. I use this method with great success. No sanding, just chemical.

I was looking at this kit over the weekend from Griots. It may be just the thing you need to do your touch-up.

I like this idea. Would you touchup the spot I burned through too? Or just the chip?

I've filled chips as big as 1/2" without problem. The key is to let the chemical do the work and to smooth the blob of paint down to just below the surface. Then you will want to do it again using clear and bring that blob down flush. The only hard part is waiting enough time for the blob to dry before working it. Give it a couple of hours before smoothing. Same with the clear. Then it will be ready to polish and wax in a couple of days.
