The only differences between the various Porter Cable configurations is the counterweight and the bundles. Remember these were originally designed for sanding wood so any accessories included are geared towards that--some include a backing plate that you won't use because it's not the size or the type you would use for polishing paint. Regardless of the two counterweight sizes, neither will cause damage or excessive vibration. There is a slight variation in the amount of vibration that's noticeable side by side between the polishers but nothing extraordinary.

I use and sell the 7424 because it works for me.

I read somewhere that there are two counterweights designed for either a 5" pad or 6.5" pad ... does it matter that much? Am thinking of picking up both types of counterweights just in case I feel compelled to switch sizes - heard that if a particular counterweight is not used there will be excessive vibration and possible damage? Is that right?

Thanks for the explanation about the counterweights, OctaneGuy! Much appreciated. I'll be picking up a copy of the how-to DVD from your site.
