This is related to this thread. I am selling a set of seat backs that have no deep scratches.

my MCS. it's got a very slow leak somewhere and the dealer tried 4
times to fix it. failed all 4. new hoses and condenser... i think it's the
evaporator and they don't want to take out the entire dash to do it.

so, i just charge it during the summer months. one charge lasts
a good 8-9 weeks.

Yep, just 2 Torx screws on each side of the seat (underneath the covers on the seat flip lever & seatback adjust lever). I raised my seat with the lever under the front (moved it upward vertically) and popped off the caps to expase the Torx screws. Unscrewed those, and started pulling (Out from the seat) from the top down. You kind of feel your way as you go. Then the bottom carpet piece has an elastic strip with a hook on the end that runs underneat the seat. You have to feel your way here too, but I slib my thumb to help separate this hook piece (make the opening larger) then slid it towards the front of the car and off the bar it was attached to.

Hope that helps for you if you take them off... If not, maybe it'll help someone else

Ok, I finally got the product that Heather sent me. I'm having a hard time attaching photos so hopefully this will work ok.

I'll just refer to the product as "paint" since that's essentially what it is. The first two photos show my before photos. Scratched somewhat. The third photo shows the paint. It reminds me very much of that Testers brand model paint you used on your models as a kid.

I masked off the area and tried a small test patch. The first photo shows what the paint looked like on the brush. This was my first warning that something might go wrong... very black. So I tried a small test patch on the bottom.

That was as far as I got. As you can see the color is black, black, black. Much darker than what the seat back color is. In addition it dried shiny, not flat like the rest of the seat back finish. This might look OK if you're willing to remove the map net to get a thoroughly detailed finish and to spray them. Even then you'd have to be willing to live with a different color than the rest of the interior which I was not willing to do. I don't think this is the product for me. It kind of gave me the feeling like I get when I see a "detailer" at a really cheap used car lot who paints tires and engine hoses black with paint... it just doesn't look right. It might cover up the scratches or it might not but I'm willing to go any further based on the initial look... just too cheesy for me. No offense to Heather.

I'd be willing to box this up and send either back to Heather or to another NAM user at my expense. Maybe someone else would be happy with this color? Let me know.

And Ken... I got this review completed within 1 hour of receiving the product!

thanks for the picts and review. yah, that is too BLACK. we need
more charcoal finish.... oh well.

so i guess your next step would be to try Prima Nero. (no need
to review that one cause we know it works well to hide most of
the scratches. )

You know though, if we could find a model paint match, it *could* work.

Random thought.

Wow, that is black. You're right, something more charcoal would be a lot better.

Re: Nero, I have used it on my scratches and it doesn't make any difference (to me).

SeattleMM thanks for being the guinea pig!

FWIW, there are quite a few sources for vinyl and plastic dyes and paints for this kind of application. Here's one. Some, like the one in the link, claim to offer custom color matching... though their stuff is in large volumes and therefore $$. You could do the whole interior with a cup of this stuff...

Many, many moons ago, I used an aerosol version of this stuff to re-color the headliner in my TR7... looked fabulous when complete.

i think i originally used Meguiar's Rubber and Vinyl protectant which
is a lot thicker and glossier but coverd up the scratches quite well.

been nero-ing over it.

First, thanks for being the guinea pig!

Yeah, as soon as I saw the photo of the seat backs that CooperGear is selling (on this thread the other day), I was worried that the stuff I sent would be way too black. I had forgotten just how "light black" or charcoal, really, the plastic is. Bummer!

Thanks for trying though. It would have been nice if it had worked out as an easy fix.

Per MLWagner's idea of using a lighter colored model paint, I can tell you that my stuff is water-based. So, perhaps a similar water-based model paint of the right color would work? Hard to say... so who's the next guinea pig for this experiment??

No need to send it back unless you just want to get rid of it (who needs extra clutter, right?). Or, feel free to pass it on to another NAMer.

If someone doesn't want to experiment on the seat backs with it, it works great on lots of dark black surfaces... plastic, vinyl, leather, rubber, etc.

Believe it or not, I LOVE using it on my black leather sandals, which get a little worn on the edges from time to time. Works like a charm.

So, feel free to keep it if you have another use for it, send it back, or pass it on to someone else. No worries here.

Thanks for trying it!

-Heather

Thanks SeattleMM! I'll keep a watch on this thread, as I have some nasty scratches on the side panel too. The little tip broke off of the factory windscreen and scratched up the side panel before I figured out what the problem was....
