Trouble with M80 and JB paint
Trouble with M80 and JB paint
I have Richard's DVD, know it, love it.
Before I do another full session with my M80 and Meguiars pads (which Nick at DP says does not have a lot of correction properties) I wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion to a problem I continually experience with this finish. I am able to obtain some pretty good reflection and depth results, eliminating most swirls, etc, but never seem to eliminate what I can only describe as a celephane appearance on the JB. It almost looks like the paint has a plastic wrap over it, even when otherwise clear. Is this normal, or am I not doing something right? I just have to imagine my finish can look better than I have so far been able to make it look. For record, car is washed by hand (wool wash mitt, gritt gard, MF drying, etc) usually 2 times weekly, gets the full process of clay prior to polishing, and I am using M80 with W8006 pad. Paint is in otherwise excellent condition and looks great in the twilight. Thanks for any and all suggestions, but I especially hope to hear from other JB owners with PC skills, and Richard!

What you are probably referring to is a slightly milky haze that is common with JB and M80. You've got a couple of options--you can follow M80 with M82 which is about half as aggressive as M80, or better yet, follow M80 with Amigo, then go to wax.
The other issue is that JB is extremely soft. I can micromar my paint just by lightly rubbing it with a clean MF towel. I try to avoid quick detailing it unless it only has a very light amount of dust, and when that is the case, Slick is my choice.
If what I'm suggesting doesn't sound like what you are experiencing, can you take any pictures of the issue you are describing?

OG......I have heard that MINI paint is softer than some other car makes paint, but did not know that within the MINI paint pallette that some colors have softer paint than others....how does chili red fit in the mix?

Compared to the paint on a PT Cruiser or a Corvette, MINI paint is softer--regardless of color. It's pretty much the same as on any BMW for that matter. And also why you can use a PC to remove swirls from the paint.
However, Jet Black, just by its nature of being black is highly susceptible to seeing scratches and micromarring. Things that won't be visible on CR or PW or PS or anything else. Even maybe invisible on AB, JB shows everything, so taking care of JB is extremely important.

Richard,
As always thanks for the response. I have a bottle of Prima Finish. Can I follow M80 with W8006 with Finish on a DP White pad to recieve similar results as with M82? I want to avoid fillers such as Amigo/HD Cleanse if possible. I would prefer to correct problems instead of masking them.

I understand the desire to correct versus mask--it's something I preach all the time, however there are always exceptions and JB is one of them. For very difficult paints, taking the paint to it's maximum potential means getting all the swirls and defects out--but as soon as the process becomes a part of the problem--micromarring occuring when wiping off the polish, for instance, then fillers can be your best friend. I suggested Amigo not for it's filling abilities, but because it contains both polymers and the ability for extremely fine polishing--both qualities that are beneficial to JB before Epicing.
Finish with the white pad may also get the job done. Why not try it and report back? LOL. I would try it, but I'm having my day off today--no polishing for me.

Makes sense. I will try it with the Finish in the next couple of weeks and let the forum know what I come up with. I also have what I can only describe as a water mark/paint run that is under the clear and starts at the driver's side washer jet on the hood. I will try and get a picture of this up tomorrow. In the past, it has become more visible with polishing and I feel like its a paint error that the dealer owes me a fix on.

I agree with the amigo and black pad after you've done the best you can with the m80. I just have a black roof on mine but I know what you mean. I also found that when I work the m80 longer and really light touch at the end it also helped. Even though the amigo and black may be a filler when you top with epic and use hydro after the wash it stays mint for a long time not like when you wax and the fillers wash off first rain. Hope that makes sense. Please show us some pics....
If what you are describing is seen in the sun as tiny little hook shapes all over the paint, aka micromarring, I have had some great results following M80 with a product from Blackfire called the Scratch Resistant Clear Finishing Polish with a Lake Country Green CCS Pad. Hasn't failed me yet. I highly recommend this for Jet black. I just polished out a 1968 Chevelle SS with M80 and noticed that after the M80 there was marring, so I followed with the Blackfire and WOW, crystal clear. Hope this helps. Good luck.
