Ding Scratch

So I figured out what the big "THUNK" was on my car last week. It's a nice 2" scratch that's dinged the passenger rear quarter panel. So what are my options? I'm thinking I need to get the ding taken out and use some Laser Blue touchup paint to mask the scratch.

Depending upon how bad that ding is, it may be repairable using PDR--paintless dent removal. Of course, with the paint damage you're describing, "paintless" may not be an option. The more conventional body repair methods may be in order.

Take it to a shop that has a PDR specialist and they'll tell you the best way to approach the problem.

Take it to a couple body shops and get some estimates... Based on the estmates, you can figure out how bad the damage is. Will Mitchel still works at Jeff's Body Shop right across the bay bridge as the service writer. I'm sure he'd give you a good price/estimate.

Take it from a guy who had a 240SX bombarded by golf-ball sized hail... PDR works GREAT !

Get rid of those dings, especially since you pre-paid for the service !

This may help

Kurt,

Not sure how far you wanna travel, but i used a place today called ding depot in Tyson's Corner. Guy named Jim PDR'ed my hood and buffed/wet-sanded out a couple of scratches near the ding. he did great work. 703 402 1577.

good luck.

Or, you can just consider it a beauty mark. Which is pretty much how I have decided to handle the big ding on the passenger side door and the one inch scratch on the drivers side near the gas cap. No funds to think about getting them removed...so they are beauty marks. Signs of a car driven every day.

Have I convinced anyone yet?

He's at WS now, tho' he may be able to put in a good word...

Was it a piece of your clutch that hit it?

PDR + touchup will be far less expensive than a full-on body shop repair/repaint. If the PDR person is up on their craft, you'll be hard pressed to tell it was ever there; and touchup, if done with care and attention, can be equally invisible.
Sorry you are in a position to have to make such decisions on your new MINI!
