So my MINI decided, by itself, to slide down my driveway and... (pics)

So this AM I managed to get out of my street OK and go to the gym. By the time I came back and was ready for work, the street was packed down (I have P Zero Neros ). I could not get up the hill, and backed down and up my driveway.

I then started walked up to the house...except the car (in gear, with the parking brake on) started SLIDING AWAY...down the driveway, down my hill, across a culvert, to where it rests now.

The rear wheels were PERFECTLY aligned with the culvert as the car rotated...I got lucky...it just HOPPED over it.

Now...tonight I need to haul it out with my Expedition...where can I hook a tow strap in the back?

There should be a little notch in the rear bumper skin that you can pull out, and screw in the tow-hook there.

See the tab on the top right of the rear bumper here, thats what you should be looking for:

Nice job of parking! I live a few miles west of you and had a similar experience getting out of my garage. The good news was I'm driving a rental while my MINI is in the shop getting repaired after getting smacked by a pickup truck during our last snow event. Take it easy tonight.

So, does that mean that those who park on hills in snow country need mooring bitts (at home) and an anchor for trips away from home?

Another car isn't needed.......I have seen and had cars sitting in a driveway just start sliding downhill. The reason is because when the car parks the tires are warm, this melts the snow a bit and then it will start sliding all by its lonesome...!

Glad it didn't hit anything big !

Have you tried driving it out of there? I'd sure give that a try first before towing it. Just my two cents. Good luck!!

If it didn't make it up the driveway, it ain't going to make it up a steeper, grassy/wet hill My only hope is if it all melts and the ground is dry enough for me to get out tonight. If there is any snow, out comes the chain.

I really wish I still had my Discovery, it was a lot shorter and taller and it would have hauled the Mini right out

BTW....your tow hook can be found by your battery in the boot

and get some all season or dedicated winter tires if you live in snowy areas

Is this the same DME that used to fidget with BMW 02s? If so - hey man, HOW THE HELL ARE YA? Good to see you've found our corner of insanity.

Hey man

The MCS is the closest thing I can get to a 2002, which is why I bought one I've had it for a little over a year, which is close a record for me hanging on to a vehicle

Do you still have an '02?

Dave,

I do (the same '73 02 I got in August of 2000), and it's collecting dust in my garage. Haven't done much with it other than let it age (dry, at least) since early 2004. It will be on the auction block soon, as I have to divest myself of it before we move to Richmond in June. I could definitely use the money - car stuff, or, more likely, an old bamboo fly rod.

What ever happened to the white '74 you had picked up a while back?

You remember Tim Lavery? He also did the MCS thing. PW/B 04. Still around these parts as well. What a blast from the past!

Take care, maybe we'll see you around sometime. I've been working in Bethesda for about 3 years now, but save the MCS from the commute by taking the MARC/Metro. Looking forward to leaving that silliness behind.

I remember Tim!

Damn, you have a great memory I traded my white '02 (my last one) and my 325is for an '87 M6 with a lot of goodies. That was my DD for a year or so, then I moved from Alexandria to Manassas, sold the M6 (Alex, I'll take "Permanent Life Mistakes for $500") and got a Honda Insight. Well, you can imagine how that transition was, so the Insight was replaced with the MCS. I'm putting around 80 miles a day on it, without a hiccup!

I still miss my 2002s, even if they were rusty and leaky

The SUV wouldn't have been needed if the car didn't have summer tires. Don't blame the car, Art... you know better than that.

Any MINI owner who keeps summer tires on their car and attempts to do anything in the snow is asking for trouble.

Heck - any CAR owner! SUVs included.

Play it safe...pull it out of there if that is the only way to get it back to pavement safely. If indeed the only way out is back up that hill then pull'er up. Make sure you have someone helping you and don't get in the way of a sliding vehicle!

I got it out last night...just enough snow had melted where I could pull it forward, turn off TC, and go fast in reverse up and over the hill!

No damage!
