You see the Fifth Gear episode where they had a Apache try to get a missle lock on a Lotus Exige? Funny stuff. Couldn't do it when they constrained the helicopter to stay within the bounds of the twisty race course. Of course when the helicopter was allowed to back off.... Blammo! Video was like that still, a chopper on his tail!

What was even better about that one is when Clarkson hid under the helicopter so the guys just throttled up and used the rotor wash to push his car out.
lol. actually saw two of those copters fly over my house the other day at tree top level. perty sweet. musta been clearing out the HOV lanes on the beltway.
I've seen quite a few choppers out my window at work. About two weeks ago I saw some serious military hardware flying around. Don't know what that was all about but seeing a bunch in a short time made me think something was up.

Most likely an exercise and not a "real world" event, Matt. Living this close to the DC area and with all the military installations within 100 miles of here, not all that strange to see the hardware in the air. Could have aircraft from anywhere, practicing protection maneuvers for the DC or Camp David areas, as well.
When you say "serious" hardware, are you talking about fighter jets like F-15s, or like Cobra attack helicopters ? Just curious.

I was a Weapon Systems Manager while at the US Air Forces in Europe(USAFE) headquarters in the late 90s. One of my assigned systems was the A-10 and you are very correct. The A-10 has a unique role in providing close air support and has the ability to blow up anything the enemy owns on the ground with its armor-piercing shells that it can dispense at a kazillion rounds per second (sorry, the exact number escapes me).
They fly low and slow and seem an easy target for SAMs and other ground weapons but they also have some really cool electronic countermeasure equipment.
Quite a unique and impressive aircraft, the A-10. You have good taste.
2 or 3 Apaches
a couple F15s
I think I even saw an F-18 one day
in addition to the Chinooks I see relatively regularly
Sounds like 3 branches of the military involved in that one, Matt. That's some very serious firepower you saw. I bet you felt like you were attending the annual airshow or something.

That show of flying hardware was for the dedication of the Air force Memorial. It's next to the Navy Annex - in sight of the Pentagon and very close to the light pole that was clipped by the jet that slammed into the Pentagon.
In the infinite judgment of our government it is surprisingly close to the flight path into National Airport.
How the oscillation of the 3 spires is controlled is an engineering marvel
