I was of course just messin with ya. I want to try shooting some 16:9 on my DV and see how that looks on the HD set just zoomed. No higher deg of resolution of course but want to see how the 16:9 looks. I like 16:9 for car video as it gives a more realistic sense of peripheral vision.

a good friend is set up as the sole distributor of a UK made product. Multi-channel video systems for in-car recording. Should be interesting.....footbox cam, fender cam, shoulder cam, plus tach and speedo overlays.

Sony's DCR-HC32 if still available will do it. You can run in and record video from a external camera / video source. And has LAN -C remote jack

Last year, when I came -->this close<-- to pulling the trigger on a compatible camcorder to record my own video for MOTD, I researched the Sony camcorders for those required features. The DCR-HC32 is fine, but if you want to go a little higher up in features, the DCR-HC96 can do it too. Current price on Amazon.com (for reference) is $549.99. Just like the HC32 though, it still doesn't do HDTV.

Thanks for everyones input, but I am done with this. I didn't know this was such a PitA!!!! I am going to keep the camera, but I guess I will wait and see what technology comes down the pipeline down the road.

Also consider the 96 only has a 10x optical zoom. The 32 is 20x. For me it's all about the glass baby! Don't even get me started about 'digital zooms'.

Of course if you don't have & use a tripod or brace on objects you'll have little use for beyond 10x anyway even with image stabilization. Ohh, and Sony has a really nice quality glass element screw on wide angle supplementary lens. The wide angle capability of most video cameras is lacking.

People will want to know if it's digital, and if it has support for LAN C remotes too.

hrm got me all excited oh well. I dont know how i would feel hanging the pro- HD camera outside the car (it wouldnt even fit its pretty big) maybe if there was a headrest mount for the rear that could hold a heavy camera w battery and lense that would be up my alley.

I'm planning a pretty solid mount system that spans the two roll bar hoops, and is nicely padded so it won't scratch anything. I wanna make it beefy because in addition to video and possibly digital still, I want to put one of my 35mm cameras with a motor drive and wide angle back there. That has some mass to it.

I got a couple MINIature video cameras and a switch box and played with them a bit. But the video quality is much lower (with the inexpensive ones I bought) than the video camera by itself. I'll probably do a bit of both methods in the end. While they are lower quality, the ability to put them just almost anywhere for some wild perspective views is fun.

I'm not a NASCAR fan but I did watch part of the Daytona 500 since it was in HD and I've not had it long. The in car cameras that were in HD were really nice. Not just the HD but the 16:9 gave a better peripheral vision effect that I thought added some realism to the 'in car cam' effect. My video camera can shoot 16:9 so I want to experiment with that as well. So many experiments, so little time!

Canon ZR700 is the model of my camera. I don't know what a LAN C remote is, but the camera has it's own remote.

This is an entry level MiniDV cam with a 2.7" widescreen. Records in widescreen as well. Small and light. I like it, especially for sub $300.
