Rocket Launched MINI's
Anyone catch Master Blasters? A new (pretty poor) show where two teams build 'rockets' in some contrived competition. Tonight as I was flipping around I spotted this. The goal was to launch a MINI (never named, just described as a small German sports car) off a ramp a few hundred feet and through a football goal post type affair.
The cars were new but already minus drive trains it appeared. The show was awful like most of the genre except for the last minute or so where each car was launced via two Tomahawk Cruise Missle solid propellant motors.
I can tell you that the MINI doesn't survive well dropping from 130 feet up and 270+ mph...
Awful waste of two MINIs, but what do they say about bad publicity being better than no...

I thought it was pretty cool
I just wonder what was the deal with those 2 cars. They never did mention what brand they were. I guess it was free and easy advertising of what they called a "German built sports car".
Caught this show completely by accident. I missed the first 15 minutes, but I only ever heard them refer to the MINIs as "small sports cars".
Still - it was fun to see MINIs on TV, even if they DID completely destroy them. Even if the goal was to "recover them safely".
Though again, my ongoing grief with the SciFi channel - they could have aired the entire show in less than 10 minutes. Not only do you have the endless commercials but you get the constant recapping and replaying of scenes you just watched before the commercial break. Argg!

10 minutes worth of content...
...for sure, once I saw what it was I waited till it was almost over and started watching and skipping along with my Replay TV. (A DVR sorta like TiVo but more network oriented). It's great to never watch commercials.
Master Blasters should have used a lighter car or just started with a shell and basic drive train. I would have never mounted the rocket engines on either side of the car bad idea. The Master Blasters built the best car, centerline thrust and a rear tail made it a winner. Boy there wasn't much left of the winning car, just a pile of smashed mini parts. 50 minutes of build up for 10 minutes of content. "Top Gear" on the other hand was really great. The $3000 used Porsche contest was a scream...terrific!
