Get together for an action photography practice
Thanks to Maxicooper and pl4ypl4y for keeping us entertained. And great shots! Seeing your and pl4ypl4y's cameras makes me desperately want to upgrade my old camera. Didn't get any good shots today...the cold froze my batteries the my camera would start up.
Great to see you and bev as well.
I wish I could stay longer. I was just started getting warm up.
I didn't know that you brought your camera, cause I might have some spare batteries.

Maxi...youre gonna have to give me some tips on how to focus so well! And DaCrema...how do you get the background in motion? Moving your camera along with the car?
Anyway, veery nice meeting Mr.MellowYellow and wife
We'll have to do a newbie run together soon

The tips is ......... , hmm, I will tell you when we go out shooting next time.
Using focus tracking feature on your camera or pre-focus at the spot where you want to take the picture.

I am far from a pro so take what I say with a grain or twelve of salt. I shoot with lowish ISO speeds, higher f stops, and slow speeds. I use a tamron 70-300 zoom (not cheep but far from top quality glass).
Generally I start the day with the camera, a Nikon D70 or 70s, in P or auto with ISO set to 200 - 400. I take some shots of people and car pics in grid to find a base setting. It also helps me get into a shooting mode. (I know it sounds hokie but that is true. If I do not take time to shoot a few shots in the grid the early shots at the autocross are all bad.) Then I slow the camera's shutter using one of the three settings at a time until I am missing more shots than I hit. The idea is not to different from landscape pictures only in this case you move the camera with the car so the background blurs.
No big secret, just a lot of luck getting a few good shots. I could never make a living with my pictures given the amount of throw away.
John
Actually, it is the same proportion, roughly 4" x 6". My images above were resized from original to 7" x 10.56" @ 72 dpi for web usage.

Thanks for the kind words. I take the shot gun approch. I shoot a bunch, keep a few and throw away a lot...

Maxi...why do you save at 72dpi? is because you don't need more than that for web posting?
Good for sample images/web display, not as proof images and not for quality print.
Note: I found the optimum size now a day is @ 96 dpi, but I don't find any diffirent from the quality, except the image will look slightly smaller on the screen, @72ppi.
You can also crop at any size that you want @ 72 ppi. It will display on the screen accordingly.
Hope this help.
Btw, I found this information very useful.

This is great information about photography guys! Thanks for sharing.
Btw, did either of you lose a case for your BlackBerry? After you all left we spotted a black case on the ground where you guys set up to take some photos. Let us know, we have it with us.
Oh, pl4ypl4y, Bev and I keep thinking that we should host a run for newbies. Something small and just a casual ride through the country. I wonder how many of us are out there.

Btw, the Blackberry case is happened to be mine.
Thank you so much, I will see you on Sat at the Breakfast.
Also, great idea for a run. A short casual run is fun indeed.
Try heading north of Germantown to Sugarloaf Mountain. Some of the local roads are fun to drive and very beautiful scenery as well.
We might be able to try some motion shot at night on Tuesday after Coffee & MINI.
I'm thinking about some location near Reston towncenter area.
We need 2 MINIs, 2 Drivers and a photographer.
take Sunrise across Centerville Rd....take it all the way around....ends up at Frying Pan Rd, which connects Rt28 to Centerville. Big loop without much traffic normally, but keep in mind it will be dark and rush hour
Actually, I looking for a scene with lots of colorful street lights. Reston towncenter at night seems to fit well and not far from the Tuesday coffee meet location.
A shiny cleaned MINI in red, white, yellow or bright blue would be perfect. My Royal Gray doesn't pop up at night.
