Average Speed

So I have successfully managed to have the average speed on my MINI clock in at 1.3 mph. I wonder what this says about NoVA/DC traffic??

Actually, I am not sure, but I assume this is because of my bad habit of sitting at stop lights with my breaks off (my MINI is a manual), or with just the parking break on. Otherwise, my commute to work every morning would take me over 2 hours!

Although not a good habit, that should not affect your average speed. Of course, being stopped will. Around here, I usually average about 14 MPH, which is misleading, because it's either 0 or 50 - 60, most of the time.

Average speed is 26.2, the magic point where average fuel consumption and average speed converge. . . .

My general thought is that average speed is calculated when the brakes are not on, but maybe this is incorrect. In that case, my bad habit of being stopped without the breaks on hasn't affected my average speed. It just must mean I sit at a lot of traffic lights since I really don't run into much traffic.

Still pretty intersting when you calculate in my long distance drives that average 65mph+. I guess my 2 1/2 mile commute to work (though with 7 stop lights) is really affecting it..

Nope, it uses running time as far as my experience. I have been sitting at a gas station recording my normal data for my logging and watched the average speed change by a tenth of a mph.

Over 30 hours if I was averaging that slow Two sounds about right though

excessive low readings like that usually stem from an OBC Glitch have you tried reseting?

No - how do I reset this? Wouldn't have anything to do with my funky clock, would it? Yes, I'm one of those that has some kind of bios error with my clock. It always runs extrememly fast.

Oh, and my average miles per gallon is 27.6. Much lower than it should be for a stick, but if I average 1.3 mph, I guess not so bad!

In the summer I sometimes get 27ish mpg (math on fill up agreed with the computer the 3-4 times I did it). Get the AC going in stop and go when one of the bridges out of town get clogged and the MPG numbers drop fast. And yes I too spend a lot of time in nutral at the stop lights with the hand brake on. If the cars all around you are not going any where no point in being in gear.

Actually, it might. I had the same problem with my clock and mph read-out (clock ran about 5-10 minutes fast or just stopped working all together at times and MPH sat between 1-2 for several months). Both were fixed by the dealer and I was told these were "known" problems. Don't know if there's any kind of TSB on either issue though.
I haven't had any problems since they fixed them, so you should consider taking your MINI in.

Just hold down the button that you use to cycle through the functions for a few seconds when you are looking at whichever reading you want to reset (mpg or mph) and it will reset to zero.
