Wheel/tire combo recommendation
Wheel/tire combo recommendation
I'm anxiously awaiting the delivery of my CMS which I ordered just last week. In the meantime, I've been looking for new wheels.
I have been set on finding a set of 19x8.5 +45mm offset wheels with 245/40/19 tires. After reading a lot of the threads discussing wheels on a Countryman, I think this combination is ideal: big wheel looks, taller sidewall for more comfort and to fill-in the wheel well, wider tread for more traction, and very importantly, there shouldn't be any rubbing issues (though my CMS will come with the optional sport suspension which is 10mm lower than normal).
Boy, it's hard finding a set of rims that I like that have those exact specs. There is one wheel that I really like that can be customized to practically any width/offset, but it is $$$$. My second option is another wheel that only comes in preset sizes:
1) 18x8.5 +40mm - I would use 235/45/18 tires as anything wider would rub.
2) 19x8.5 +35mm - I would use 225/40/19 tires as anything wider would rub.
Note that for all of the wheel/tire combos I mentioned above, including my "ideal" one, the tires will have the exact same "flushness." The only difference is the how much farther the tires extend inward (wider tire will extend further in) and how "stretched" they look.
Which one would you pick?

i am sticking with the stock 18" turbofan wheels, but up sizing the tires from 225/45R18 to 225/50R18
this will increase diameter from 25.9" to 26.9", filling the well nicely
i am running 205/70R16 winter tires now, diameter 27.3"

So you are saying 18 x 8.5 +40mm is flush with the black trim around the wheel wells?
I have been trying to find a good size for my Countryman that are wide but don't rub.
Thinking about trying these wheels.

My opinion is to first be sure to set your suspension before you go about buying new wheels and tires. If you have any desire at all to lower the car, you will want to explore that curiosity first.
19 x 8.5 et45 wrapped in 245/40 will most assuredly NOT work on a car lowered significantly on coils. But it will be fine with the sport suspension or even lowering springs. That is roughly the setup that kconner and MotoGreg are running on their Countrymen.
I had a set of Beyern Bavaria 10-spoke wheels in 19 x 8.5 x et40 wrapped in 245/40 tires and it was pretty much rub free even with NM lowering springs. I very much doubt it would rub on the factory sport suspension.
If you're interested, I'm selling the set (wheels and custom MINI center caps, no tires) for $400. They weigh 21 lbs. per wheel.
