Tire Pressure Sensors

Do they REALLY need to be rebuilt every time a tire is removed/replaced on a wheel? This is my first car to have these. I would like to know if I am being BS'ed by the tire store.

TIA!

the tpms sensor has 2 parts, the pressure sensor/transmitter/battery and the stem

they have separate p/n and are purchased separately,

see parts 4 and 5 below

part 4 is the sensor and cost around $80+
part 5 is the stem and cost around $10+

tire stores will insist on changing the stem, just as they have always done before tpms arrived

the sensor will fail at some point when the batteries fail, i do not know how long they last but have heard 5-7 years

so depending on the type of tire you have and the miles/year you drive, the sensor may last several tires or fail before the tire wears out

Had to tell my tire installation shop to not charge me and to keep the original valve stems. Otherwise, the new tires showed a message that the pressure had changed. inflated to proper amount, reset, and was on my way. Got a nail in driver side rear this week and indicator told me it was getting low. Must be working.

Just out of curiosity if any of you know. . . Do the sensors need to see pressure and rotation or just pressure? I would rather not run the TPMS in the new Advan wheels I have if I do not have to. In other cars I was able to make a tube out of PVC pipe and put a stem in it and pressurize it. I just usually throw it in the spare tire well in the cars. I would just throw it in the back of the storage area in the Contryman.
