Finding largest 18 that will fit

Ok everyone.

I have searched through threads, used tire calculators and tape measures. No matter what I do I cannot figure out the largest circumference of an 18 tire I can use on my CM.

None of the tire dealers seem to want to assist me, if it isn't in the computer as an alternate size, I am SOL. While I want a really aggressive AT type tire, I need something to fill up the gap between the wheel and fender more than anything. I am personally a fan of the old school big rubber look. I ran extremely low profile tires on my last MINI and got sick of replacing them everytime I ran over a pebble. Heck maybe even a whitewall would be nice (Completely kidding on this one).

The largest I've seen here is GeoffreyM's 225 50 R18's. He has some photos posted. If i recall correctly he was using Kumho 4X's. When it's time to buy winter tires I'm thinking I will go with this size.

i fit 205/70-16 winter tires on my cms all4

they are 27.3" od, 1.4" od larger than the oem 225/45-18 tires and nothing rubs, even with 6 180 pounders sitting in the car, 1 in each seat and 2 in the open boot, sitting on the ledge

I have 235/50-18s (27.3" od) on rims with a 48mm offset and no rubbing, no binding.

I believe I read in a previous post about 225/55-18 fitting but may have had some rubbing.

Here is another thread with 235/50-18.

Post what you decide to go with and how it works out for you.

Michael, to use an AT type tire, you will have to drop down to a 16" rim
because the lowest profile AT tire is going to be a 70 series, and most will be 75 series or even taller

here is a photo of my cms all4 with sport suspension on 205/70-16 winter tires, the wheels are mini OEM 16" alloys, 16-6.5 with 46mm offset, the OD is 27.3"

these fit with no rubbing, even with 6 180 pounders aboard, 1 in each seat plus 2 more sitting in the open boot

photo with stock 225/45-18s, 25.9" OD
