ECU upgrades
ECU upgrades
For a Cooper, not an S
Who's got what? I'm running the stock ECU still. It is one of the things I'm thinking of doing for next spring, though, as I make my car a little more trackable. Passing stock S's is good, but now I want to pass modded S's.

I drive an MC, and love MTH. Simple, easily reversable, and very scalable with your mods (say you start with a stock car, then get MTH, once you add a few mods, you send it back and get it tweaked, and you'll sometimes squeeze more power out of it). Of course, you dont have to listen to what I say, since I am biased, but you can ask all the people who have dealt with me and see what they say!
There's the GIAC, UNIChip (piggy back), Shark Injector, AMD OneClick (dunno, think this might be discontinued).
Here is a good discussion, by andy@ross-tech.com, about Flash vs Piggyback ECU upgrades:

I just ran MTH on the track. Nice upgrade. It gives a little extra power at around 3,000 rpm's. Not huge, but helpful. If you want to pass modded S's you need r-compound tires, lots of seat time, and a less experienced S driver:smile:

I dont remember the exact price, but for around 200 you can get the MTH (and cable) (correct me if im wrong). its certainly worth the price. I havent dyno'd so i cant give you a HP/$ ratio, but it offers a lot. Do some reading about it over in the MTH forum on NAM.

Its $190 for the Standard File, and $110 if you need the cable.
I recommend the Tuner File for the simple reason, it comes with 12 mo of updates included (Standard does not. After 4 Updates on Standard, it costs more than the Tuner), and gives more power, torque, and a much bigger grin on your face when driving.

I don't track my Mini (non-S), but the MTH Tuner File with my mods makes for some extra fun driving. However, the dyno didn't show me the numbers I was hoping for. I didn't do a dyno run pre-modded or pre-MTH, so I really don't have something to compare against. On 91 octane I got a mere 108.3hp & 103.3ft.-lbs. torque at the wheels. Anyone out there have a stock non-S dynograph (at the wheels) to share? Regardless, I feel MTH was a very worth while investment. Seat o' the pants dyno says it's all good.

I ran MTH in my '04 Cooper for several months, and loved it. I thought I had gotten a monster of a car, but it was just smoke & mirrors.
MTH took away power from the 1500 - 3800 RPM range, then dumped it on full-bore at 4000, making the car surge forward. I thought I had gained at least 10 horsepower, and was all excited when I took it to the dyno. I figured, with my 16" SSR Comps, that I would be putting 110 or more on the pavement. Turns out I could only achieve 101. I was mortified and took the MTH back off the car. It turns out the car accelerates much more smoothly without it.
I haven't gone back to the dyno since taking it off, but I did add a CAI and coil-pack. While the acceleration is still linear, it's much stronger, and I can now keep up with a stock S -- with no ECU mods at all.
I've thought about requesting an update to my MTH, but I just felt so horribly cheated to have only put 101 on the dyno.
To put that 101 into perspective, consider that most cars lose ~12% to the drive-line. Using that as a base, that would mean that I was producing 112 at the crank, meaning that MTH actually cost me 2 BHP.
