Pondering New mods: Input needed!

Hello all, I just joined NAM and I am looking to get some input. For starters I have a 2006 r50 mini cooper with the cold weather package. I would like to start doing some performance mods in the next few months. Here's what I have in mind as my first:
  • CAI, throttle body, and exhaust.
I have found a good price for a CAI (DDM) and exhaust (Meghan) combo. I was wondering where I can find a larger throttle body to go with this.
My basis behind this combination is that the CAI will provide more air flow (cold) into the throttle body. Now I want to replace the throttle body to provide even more air to the cylinders. Also I want to even out the intake stroke and let the engine breath more, which is where the Meghan exhaust comes into play.

Any input would be greatly appreiciated, whether it be about the DDM CAI, Meghan exhaust, replacement throttle body, or suggestions in general.

Thanks

Jim

You're on the right track. Improving the breathing works The stock 52mm TB should flow plenty of air for a Cooper with bolt ons. Try a Google search & you'll find some online calculators to determine TB size & CFM requirements.
m7 Tuning used to offer a modified TB that was taper bored to 58mm (at the inlet & outlet). A search here & on the MINI2 forum will turn up several threads. All the people that tried it seemed very pleased with the improved throttle response but they aren't cheap. If you went with one you'd want to match port the thermoplastic intake manifold to the larger TB size to take full advantage of it.
I don't know of anyone in the states that still reworks the VDO Drive by Wire TB's but Lohen & GT Tuning.uk.co still offer them. GT Tuning only shows one for the R53 but they have said they will also do them for the R50s.
Best of luck with the mods!

I would do that and get a nice tune, should put down an extra 10-15 hp(after a nice tuneup of fluids and spark plugs and whatnot)

You'll be really happy with the intake and exhaust. I have different brands (aFe intake, Borla exhaust.) but I imagine the gains are comparable. It feels like a different car entirely. Some report the DDM intake producing a little more power, so enjoy!

Love to see/hear of other modded R50s.
