So I'm getting my roof painted..

So I'm getting my roof painted... white.. let me explain the situation before I get bashed on by everybody on why I did it.

Basically we got the Mini Cooper when we traded our '97 Infiniti QX4 (there was a gas leak which smelled horrible). We traded that car for the Mini with the whole cash for clunkers deal. Some of you might know this, but the Cash for Clunkers deal ran out of funding within days. So we were pretty much forced to get our HzB Mini Cooper.

Onto the roof painting...

So basically I wanted to get a Mini-S spoiler, but didn't want to pay $200 for it. I found on Craigslist that some guy was selling it for $75 (in white, my roof is black), which I thought oh sweet, I can just paint it black. So I got quoted for about $120 to paint the spoiler. My dad calls his friend and he tells us he can paint the roof about $200 which we thought which was a better deal. (My dad loves the old school look of the Minis). We also got the guy to throw in the white mirror caps for $25 (He was selling for $35 ea). So basically $100 for both mirror caps and the spoiler.

So I'm spending about $300 on a white roof with a Mini-S spoiler and white mirror caps.

The good part is, I can sell the Cooper Spoiler to make some money back as well as the black mirror caps.

I'll post up pics of the white roof when I get it back from the shop!

Good find!

There aren't enough MINI owners around here to find good stuff like that on Craigslist. Every once in a while I'll see a set of MINI wheels but never any body parts.

Mannnnn, where do you live that you got that sweet of a deal on the paint? I'd love to get my roof painted and at that price, it's totally doable.

Good luck on the paint job. Make sure they know what they're doing and that the paint won't chip soon after cuz that'll suck. For that price, I don't know how well the paint job will be. I would like to see pictures of it if/when you get it done.

$200 seems a bit low to get a roof painted when typically it's over $600. Make sure a good job is being done, proper prep etc.

Okay, finally got pictures, even though it's been weeks! The car isn't clean because it's been raining on and off here, and plus I'm bringing it in for maintenance, so i'll get a free car wash!

Me and my friends managed to squeeze three cars into this 2 car spot. Oh San Francisco..

So how do you like the paint job? I've been craving a black roof for my Chili Red instead of a white one. And wow, is it that bad for parking in SF!? I haven't been there in a while..Scary. Nice parking job though

I wouldn't be Smiling and Laughing about getting a "Free" Car Wash at your Dealer...you do know that your Dealer's Car Wash will put more Swirls on your Car than you rubbing it with a Scratchy Green Pad...Right??!! Do the Car Washing yourself...or you'll be claying for it later!!

I'm just being lazy, the car is in a real bad of a car wash, it's been a few months. The rain really sucks.

I understand, just trying to warn you of the Damage your Dealer can do, I put a Sign in Molly each time she goes in..."Pleae do NOT Wash Molly!!" I'm guessing you don't have the convience of a Garage??

Just remember that having the Dealer Wash your Car will mean more work for you later, that's all I'm saying.

I haven't had any problems with my dealer washing my car. They even wax him too and he looks awesome with very little swirls.

$200 for painting the roof is an excellent deal. I just picked up supplies at my auto paint store for the soon-to-arrive JCW front bumper. 1 pint of Aspen White (roof & mirror caps) was $19, but 1 quart of Nightfire Red metallic (body) was $90. And those are only the base coat.

As for durability, you should be fine if your dad's friend uses some kind of urethane clear (most of them are these days). They vary in quality, but even the cheapest urenthane clear today are superior to old paint chemistry in decades past.
