Flywheel Recommendation?

Since I've been making the switch to the 6-speed Getrag transmission in my R50 I've noticed many complaints about the standard flywheel in the R53. Does anybody have any recommendations for an aftermarket flywheel or any positive comments on the standard Cooper-S flywheel. Any input (and I mean any) is greatly appreciated! Thanks

-Stefan

I would have to recommend a Fidanza Flywheel. I Have had mine for about 8 months and love it.

You would not want to use the stock Cooper S flywheel, it is too heavy for the W10 engine. I do however, recommend a Fidanza flywheel. You could combine that with a Clutchmasters FX100 disc and pressure plate. Sounds like a bit of a project, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Which clutch did you pair it with?

I'm pairing it with a stock clutch kit. That should be adequate no?

I have to do a clutch job on my R50 cooper and have a Clutchmasters lightweight flywheel, and would like feed back from anyone who has done this as far as the driveability in daily traffic,as i understand it's not alot lighter than a stock R50 flywheel?or should i resurface the OEM.I love to drive it but bottom line is i spend more time in traffic than speeding around.Sorry to have brought up this old thread search on this subject is a deadend.

For those running the 6 speed gearbox, you shouldn't be using lightweight single mass flywheels with stock clutch. The dual mass, absorbs "harmonic" vibrations. When you swtich to single mass, this job is up the the clutch disc, with the springs. The clutch has to has springs on, or else possible damage to the engine!

Hi there,

I'm from Germany and would be happy, if you could help me out with your know how here.

My original BMW flywheel is broken and there are two points against an new stock part:
- way too expensive
- my prefacelift could be zippier when I hit the gas pedal

I've some years of tuning experience and read a lot about the fidanza flywheel. Some here in G have it too, but here the main discussion point is the clutch (from 2mass to 1mass one needs a sprung clutch as you mentioned above).

After more reading I found, the Clutch Masters FX100 Stage 1 kit (03-050-HD00-S) should be the best solution for an everyday car and because both parts are way more expensive in Germany than in the US I looked right there for a shop...

1st question: Am I right with my thoughts and is the Fidanza/CM FX100 a good combo for the R53 6gear manual transmission (2002) at everyday use? (In Germany I can't get reports about that CM clutch or the combo)

2nd question: What can you tell me about the following shop: www.ultrarev.com ? Is it trustable? Do you know a better/cheaper one?

3rd question: Since my R53 MCS know how could still be better (it's my first; before I worked on other cars) it would be perfect, if I could get a report link of that task. Do you know some web addresses where the changing of flywheel/clutch is shown and described?

It would really be nice if you could help me out!

Hello mate, you'd better ask this in the drivetrain section, this section is only for R50 discussion.
