Sorry, I had you confused with someone else who had built a turbo Cooper "in the past".

I guess there have been 3 or 4 turbo Coopers built by various people in various places. It just seemed like there would be someone saying "look!" and then nothing heard about it after that.

I searched for "cooper turbo" and sorted by thread start date ascending:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=turbo+cooper

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=turbo+cooper

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=turbo+cooper

There are probably more...

if this winds up being something beyond that. I'm not saying yours is in the same boat as those, but without information...

Yah there have been a few turbo'd coopers over the past few years
  • Doug's old cooper with M7 turbo Indi blue/ Black
  • Brit's Cooper with same M7 turbo JB/JB
  • Diamond Racing Groups Cooper CVT turbo all yellow
  • The blue Cooper in Florida with the custom metal arches and front flip hood had a turbo
  • Maxi-tuner over in germany with their turbo'd One (cooper engine)
And am I right in thinking that this CR cooper is the same as the one that belonged to the fellow that used to post with us on TMMZ and M|U that swapped in a 6-speed? I'm spacing on his name, but the car had yellow headlights, recaro seats, custom white hood stripe. Or is this a different turbo'd CR cooper?

I remember the Yellow turbo from GoMINI magazine i believe it was. That was the first Cooper that I ever say that had vents on the bonnet. That was a pretty sweet car. I can't believe that none of those kits have ever been released to the general market.

Maxi tuner has been selling their Cooper turbo kit to the public for a while now

Exactly what I'm thinking. In a few years when my engine has 80-100 thousand miles and a new MINI S is probably starting at $28,000 plus, it'd be cheaper to have my engine gone thru and swap a tranny in and LSD at the time.

There was a CR Cooper in NE PA that the owner attempted to install a turbo on. He attended a couple of our runs. Unfortunately, he was never able to get the car to run very well with the turbo - probably due to lack of ECU knowledge & tuning capability - and sold the car a year or so ago at a fairly hefty loss. I'm not sure what became of it afterwards.

and maybe more importantly, breathe fire (pun intended) and keep the car that you love. a stealthy turboed R50 cooper is right up my alley. can you imagine? of course you could always drop in a new engine and tranny for about $10,000 in parts- not including labor. but, if the cost is comparable to turbo and get a stronger tranny- hell yes.

then again, maybe it would be outrageously priced and cost more than a new S. and the emissions is another big factor here in the police state. of course i guess you can work around that for a price.

still the thought of leaving other cars in the dust in my R50 is definitely enticing along with the second life factor.

anyhow when/if the kit is ready for release i'm in socal and i'll be the guinea pig!

Is there any word on progress with this kit or any other turbo kit for R50s or R53s?

Are you serious? That's more than any of the JCWs have. What else did you do other than add a Turbo? How much did it cost (parts+labor)? unless you did it yourself in which case, was it fairly difficult to do?

it looks great though!

Where could one purchase one of these kits? And would the CVT take it?

On the very slim chance you could find a kit you'd probably blow up your motor & trans with it. You'd spend less selling your Cooper & buying an S.

+1
The CVT nor Midlands would be able to take it. They can barely take the stock performance...

How did you build your turbo kit on your R50? I've been trying to do this now for a while and haven't had any luck.

any updates about this one?? i wonder a stock cooper engine with stock compression ratio can handle up to 15psi of boost???

or is it better to swap an w11 engine which it has lower cr ratio???

Has anyone attempted to install a remote turbo? I know it would involve allot of exhaust piping but it will reduce the temperatures versus a manifold mount turbo.
