I just swapped out Avon M500 215/45-17 w/15k miles. That was a rough ride on a stock '04 suspension. New tires are Dunlop Super Maxx 205/45-17 - and the ride is better.
The problem with the Avons was that they relayed every minor road bump, strip, crack, bug-on-the road directly to your butt. The Dunlops give a better ride, also seem to have less turning resistance. So far I give em

As tires age they get hard and noisy. The M500 should be comfortable enough compared to the M550 A/S.

I did a spreadsheet of a few that had good tread ratings/price/performance/reviews for 15", would only cost slightly more for 16. Had to embed it into a .doc to attach. I really like the KDWs tread pattern over anything I've seen out there.
