Advancing engine timing
Advancing engine timing
To advance the engine timing, does the timing chain need to be adjusted? Or is this something that can be done by modding the ECU?
I'm interested in trying out these spark plugs, but apparently I have to advance the engine timing by 30%. Just wondering how to do that.

the site is refering to ignition timing. on all newer cars the ignition timing is controlled by the ecu.
engine timing would envolve an adjustable cam sprocket or modding the cam sprocket. i cant imagine having to do this for spark plugs.
the ecu will be able to adjust for how the plugs fire. they look pretty interesting and have a good theory for how they work. youll have to let us know how everythings going if you decide to get em.

The ignition timing is 'fixed', or unadjustable in modern cars. Unlike the old days, when the distributer is set up initially with a timing light to set static timing, the timing info comes from sensors that read the position of both the camshaft and the crankshaft and relay this info to the ECU. The ECU will adjust the timing depending on programming and operating conditions.
That looks like a lot of BS to me. And, those are not the only kind of plugs like that. These are popular with bracket racers looking for an hundreth.

It also seems to be like MSD style ignition, where you have multiple sparks per revolution. Ask any who truly knows and they will tell you multiple spark discharge is NOT NEEDED on a street car. Multiple spark discharge is best suited for very high compression, 13:1 and up, very highly boosted cars, or cars running a lot of nitrous. Don't waste your money, IMO.

If you get them, let us know what you think.
So, if I understand correctly, it would seem that the ECU should adapt to the new spark plugs and adjust the timing automatically. In other words, I don't need to spend hundreds on an ECU mod just to use $40 worth of spark plugs.
As to whether these plugs are a good performance mod, I'm not concerned. I'm actually more interested in mods that might improve gas mileage. (Blasphemy, I know!) I figure the car has been plenty of fun to drive stock (for me, at least), so if I can improve economy without degrading performance, then I see that as worthwhile.

Don't worry about the ECU, I'd just try them and see if you see an improvement. Maybe they will help a little...if they don't it's not a huge loss.
The need to advance the timing you were told of is almost certainly wrong.

Hey, Lucky Dog...
You're listed as a vendor, so tell me what kind of ECU program or chip you sell and how it can improve the performance of my mildly modded cvt MC. I could use higher full-throttle shift points, optimised fuel curve, more ignition timing advance. These changes would definately improve my engine performance- the computer is still on the stock weakling setting and I

just looks like more crap to get in the way of the spark.
