I ve installed the system myself.

indicator stalk + wiring harness(comes with temp sensor)

Probably your car already has the temp sensor installed.. so you aren't going to need it!

Thank Crash & Ita!! I have the outside temp already, would I still need the temp sensor?
Ita - how hard was it to install? I should be able to get the harness from my dealer [Cincinnati MINI], no?

Glad to help out.

No you sure wouldn't need the temp sensor. It's already there. The way I understand it, if the switch is on the stalk & the temp sensor is there you have what you need. At least that is what I think.

Now you just have to get your dealer to program it. Mine did it for free.

From what I gather, I would need the stalk and harness - I'm sure the gang @ Cincinnati MINI would take care of it.

Your dealer provides you the wiring harness.. don't worry... !

I wont lie to you, it's a medium\hard installation and i advise you to do it with a friend.(you probably going to spend around 3\4 hours)

There's a DIY guide somewere that helped me a lot!

I finally managed to convince my local dealer (Northwest MINI in Fife, WA) to do this. I had to pay for the minimum labor cost, which came out to nearly $150 (I think mainly because they we're convinced it wasn't going to work and didn't want to waste their time).

Luckily, it worked just as expected - and they were thankful for having taught them something new.

Good luck

Hi,I am new around here, I tried to get OBC reprogrammed at momentum-mini in Houston. The service people don't even know it could be done, he went in to check his computer once I showed him the coding. They said they can hook it up with computer and program it but since it would take about an hour they will have to charge me service for 1hr, which would be about $150.
I am not sure if I want to get it. Do you think its worth it?

It would be for me, but I love being able to run my mileage all the time. And the dist. to empty is pretty nice... esp when it gets down to 1 mi.

For me I have to say no it is not worth it. Nice to have, but for my money not $150 nice. It was a $200 option that I passed on.

When my MINI was in for service I asked if they would program the OBC. I got a funny look from the SA, but he said they'd try. I was figuring it would cost a half hour of shop time, $50. When I picked up my car I was told it was no charge because the car had to be hooked to the computer anyway. We have a great dealer here in MAG MINI. The service & the service personnel are top notch. It's things like this that will have me buying my next MINI from them.

Thanks Chuck, I thought so, I will be moving to Oh, close to Cleveland in May/June and will have to get my next service there (after 15000 miles). So, may be I will be lucky and they will get it done for me.

so a $200 option that you can get a dealer to do for less than $100? The only thing I can think to warrant that cost is the R&D that went into it. grrr...

Just had this done for my 04 R50 (Sept 03 build date). Had the stock with the computer icon on the button. The shop had never done this before, but it was a quick job. $65. Sweet.

What about upgrading from the 02 OBC to an 05+ OBC? I think the later ones had instant MPG readout that I WANT!

Sorry but you can't get an 02 obc to work like the 05 obc, I've tried it and can't make it work.
But if a MINI didn't have obc all you have to do is install the turn signal stalk that has the button, then we reprogram it, easy to do.

Help....Can this be done to a Canadian MINI

My daughter just had substantial work body work done at a BMW dealership in Ontario Canada. We thought tyhat while the car was under their control they could update the OBC as described in the .pdf Step 8. Her car has the toggle switch that shows outside temperature and one other function (not my car so I cannot remember, sorry).

The dealership has told her that the USA build cars and the Canadian build are different. This does not make sense to me other than the obvious differences between metric and imperial but I differ to you guys here...

Does that make sense? Has anybody done this in Canada and if so at what dealer???

Please help as I would feel alot better that my daughter has the functionality of DTE.

Thanks all

I had to go to a non-dealer/performance garage (Orr Autosport in MN). The dealership will claim it can't be done, probably because it doesn't jive with their pricing structures. They charge 4X more when you have it installed when you order the car vs. activating it afterwards.

Does it require a special computer? I'm not sure what shop to look for

That, I'm not sure about. I believe so. The garage I took it to specializes in BMWs and they had the same computer as the dealership, which works for both BMW and MINI programming apparently. I was their first MINI case and it worked fine.

Hmm I'll have to track down an independent bmw shop, seems the larger shops don't wanna bother with it.

Here is the retrofit kit: For MINIs without the little OBC button on the stalk.

Retrofit Kit For On Board Computer Part # 62130029492

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/62130029492/

Here is the retrofit instructional PDF for the above kit. States in the coding section that the CD disc 26.0 or higher , also states "retrofit on-board computer" path using the MoDiC/DIS. So that might help the MINI Dealership track down the location using the ISIS unit .

Click here for PDF Factory MINI OBC.

If you have the little button on the wiper stock , I believe 05+ production. Then they just need to turn it on ( code it ) , if it was not ordered from the factory. Which is step 8 in the PDF file above only.

Thanks
