Super interested.

Im looking into a Mini for a project. I'll be going to school for manufacturing tech so I could do some small stuff there, and I have a friend that does auto body stuff.

But the real question.

What is a good price for a car not like a mint condish restoration or anything. just something that isn't tottally a rust bucket or anything.

I paid $7800 for a nice 1275 daily driver that didn't need any work.

$4k-6k should get you a decent car that runs and is in decent shape, but will need some work.

just shop around and take your time before you commit on a car. maybe checkout your local mini club, they would be able to help you find one or be able to check it out for you and ensure your not getting ripped off

I paid $4600 for a car that I drove home to Vegas from Cleveland (but didn't quite make it due to some rust).

Ditto on WestPA's... You will find no shortage of people you will give them a recimendation. I know that have a car in stock for $4K that is in pretty shape.

classicore has some nice upscale cars. they're in carolina? but i think when the time comes you gotta look at the minis overseas the same cars for 8000 here are like 3000 there ; yes that's 1500 lbs.

I've imported a few Minis. It isn't difficult. But I've been lucky on all. Even the worst I broke even on. Prices have since increased substantially and sellers in the UK have wised up. Even Clubman are now bringing favorable prices whereas a few years ago you could buy one for much less.

My assessment:
1500 quid x $1.96 exchange = $2,940 USD
AA or RAC inspection and condition report = $300
transport Mini to Soouthampton docks = 150-200 quid = $300-$400
ship mini RORO = $1,500
Duty @ 2.5% = 2,940 x 2.5% = $73.50
Dock fees = $100
Brokerage fee $250
Travel to pickup Mini @ port (rent trailer, gas, food, time etc) $200
Total so far, about $5,600 for a Mini you know nothing about, haven't seen or driven, don't know how much rust, etc....

So, if there are cars in the US under $10,000, titled, etc, they are well worth considering. My money is on westpaminis as I know Pete and Alistair. They try to sell a Mini in a very honest & forthright manner. I also would venture a look at Turky's.

I had excellent results buying my '80 Mini City Saloon from Carol Trammell and Richard Limbrey in Hilton Head SC. Good people. They import them using a friend in GB that finds them, inspects, repairs if needed, and handles the SouthHampton end. The cars then undergo any further needed work here in US. They advertise on MiniMania and eBay. Their email is carolb555@hotmail.com. They had about 6 Minis of various flavors when I bought mine in Nov. Highly Recommended.

Well, I finally registered here. Thanks so much for the kind words. Peter and I try our best to bring quality driver minis to the market here in the US. It's getting harder and harder to to with the exchange rate though.

We currently have a really nice yellow mini in our consignment page that's available for a short time at $4k. PA inspection, and ready to go.

I looked around on ebay motors alot, but with any car, classic cars in particular, I try not to buy from a private party. I would rather buy a car from someone, or a company, who has seen alot of these cars. People who have experience in determining a good car versus a bad car.

people on ebay, and I know this b/c I've done it too, tend to embelish their cars, b/c they want them to sell.

this is the std for the trade...no surprise there...what will surprise you is how straightforward Alistair & Pete are about their cars. I have read where a few felt they were too honest (how often do you hear that?)

One BIG caution: DO NOT buy a car from a dealer in North Carolina
