I just changed the oil and filter on my 67 1275 S today. It took almost 5 quarts which included draining the oil cooler and refilling it with fresh oil.

Survey says:

According to Haynes - oil capacity @ change with filter, 4.8 litres for manual tranny - that's from the 69 to 01 book - all engines

I put in 4 1/2 quarts and start checking things, then top it off.

Don't forget to top off the carb too!

What type of oil/fluid do you use in the carb? I checked mine today and it is perfect but I have no idea what to buy.

Thanks

Surprised there hasn't been debate on this - or is everyone just waiting for the opening volley.

Again - this is a subject of much debate if you research it. The original user documentaion just says use engine oil - a subject onto it self....altho 5w-20 appears to be the conventional wisdom for most street use.

You can 'tune' the performance of the carb by using different weights (viscosities) of oils however. {you do understand the funtion of the oil?} I have been using 3-in-One in the pot of my HIF-6, after seeing several recommendations....yep, 3-in-1. I've been happy with it. I did disassemble the top end of the carb and cleaned the pot/piston and spring, to remove all the accumulated gunk, put it back together than filled with 3-in-One when I switched, not knowing what was in there b4. First importance is free movement of the piston. When I got mine the piston was hanging up, and there was no oil in there. There was gunk in the chamber, esp on the piston spring. Just generic carb crud build up, but it kept things from moving freely. Good time to check what needle(s) you have too.

I've also been told that using something lightweight like sewing machine oil in the carb dash pot is good. I ran my 5w-20 in there with no apparent ill effects, but have been searching for lighter weight oil.
