Fuel gauge nonfunctional after switch to negative ground
Fuel gauge nonfunctional after switch to negative ground
I just finished a conversion to negative ground and an alternator for my '67 Cooper S. Car runs great but the fuel gauge reads full even when the tanks are nearly empty. I surmise that bypassing the voltage regulator as suggested in the instructions offered at MiniMania somehow pollutes the signal to the gauge from the sending unit. Anyone have any suggestions to get my fuel gauge working again?
Try removing the hot lead from the sending unit on the tank, with the ign. on. If it still reads anything but empty you have a short somewhere. Other than that' I would suggest removing the sending unit & see if the float arm is stuck. Be prepared to make or replace the gskt.
Changing to an alternater with its stronger charge rate will still be corrected by the fuel gage/tach. voltage stablizer (mounted on the back of the speedo) None of the wiring changes for removing the voltage regulator effect the fuel gage ..............LUCAS The dark prince strikes again!! Good luck!

There should be 2 wires on the gas tank sending unit. Change them around. Your old ground wire will now be hot and your old hot wire will now be ground. You might also have to do the same thing to your wipers.
