Hey guys, I'm looking to buy my first Classic Mini and want some input from this experienced group. I loved my second gen New Mini and have since owned several Miata's for the purpose of a fun weekend car. Always wanted a classic and figure now is the time before the clean ones all jump in price. Been researching off and on for a couple years, very heavily over the last year. I am pretty much set on a Mk 3 or later with a 1275. I know lots of people like the 998, but I live in the mountains and will occasionally need to make highway runs so the extra power is very much welcome. I also think I want LHD for ease of use. I have owned other classic cars, including Triumphs, so I know maintenance is a must and breakdowns happen. Is there any Mini specific caution, other than look for rust, I need to know before buying or owning one? Did anything about the car surprise you when you got your first one?
I ask because I have never driven one and cannot find one local to check out. This means I will likely be buying remote and I really don't want to get a car and find out I hate it on general principle.
Also, and this is a long shot, especially in the time of Covid, but does anyone have a car in the Pittsburgh area I might be able to ride in / drive? I know I have seen a few at shows including the PVGP each summer so maybe someone wants to take pity on me and let me check theirs out? I would be willing to compensate for your time if that interests anyone. Any and all constructive feedback is appreciated. If you want to tell me to get bent, don't waste the time typing it.
