looking for a old mini
Much larger project than buying one of the new MINI's. There are a number of questions that you need to answer before you begin to try to find the car. Not the least of these (but not the biggest either) is how much do you want to spend? Classic prices vary anywhere from the low $1000's (i.e. $3-$4K) for a project up to the high $10K's ($17-$18) for a well restored classic with some pedigree (or special built cars like a VTEC converted or the like.) More important the the $$$'s might be what are you looking to do with your classic? If it's a weekend toy, expected daily driver, show car etc. will have a great effect on what you should be looking at. Finally you need to decide how much work you want to do to the car yourself. Doing your own wrenching in not required to own a classic but it is considerably less expensive (you think BMW techs are expencive...) Just a few thoughts.
I would recommend talking with Pete and Alistair at westpaminis.com. They are above all enthusiasts as well as having a pretty good sense of the Classic marketplace even if you don't buy one of the cars they are offering.
Good luck and welcome to the madness
