Fuel Filter

Does my new (to me) '88 truly not have a fuel filter or is it hidden somewhere. It has a mechanical fuel pump and is a 998. I'm about to put in (from scratch) a fuel filter but I was worried that there might be a very dirty fuel filter hidden somewhere that I should replace instead. I've been have stalling problems so I'm ruling out possibilities - bad/dirty gas, clogged fuel filter (if there's even one), and finally, bad fuel pump. Thank you for any input you may have.

There should be a filter between the fuel pump and the carb. Someone may have put one between the tank and the pump too, but the factory didn't.

I don't believe you'll find a fuel filter in the parts list for a carb'd < pre injection > car. Mine has none.

Haynes mentions fuel filter service only when discussing routine maintenance on fuel injected models ....

Moke may have been an exception ....

Thank you for the confirmation!!! None can be found And I hear it's wise to install one. I may try to install it before the pump, in the engine bay...to protect the pump from impurities. Oh so very tight down there.

I've had my car for 14 years .. standard mechanical pump on a 1275 with HIS-6/HIF-44 carb

no fuel filter

never had a problem

know where you buy your fuel

if you doubt the quality of your tank, clean and seal it or replace .... ditto for fuel lines ... if in doubt renew.

no harm in adding one, but not a must do IMO/IME

your lawn mower carb has a higher probability of getting clogged from bad fuel

I ended up putting it between the pump and the carb.....less surgery, more access. Seems to be working fine. Thank you all for the great advice.
