This is how to change the Fuel Pump in your R60. The R60 does not have have a replaceable Fuel Filter, it is built into the Fuel Pump, this is what was said to me from the MINI dealer and after getting to the pump. So don't waste your time and money needing to change a Fuel Filter like I did.

To change the Fuel Pump remove the passenger rear seat by removing the plastic covers

Place a Flat Head Screwdriver on the metal rail behind the plastic cover and tile the screwdriver back to pop off the covers.

using a 5/8 socket at 25ftlb to remove the rear seat nuts and the front seat bolt using a 50mm Torx at 50ftlb.

Once the seat is removed there is a perforated cut of the fuel pump cover.

Use scissors to cut the tiny connections and fold back the carpet to reveal the cover.

Remove Cover by folding it over to the drive side rear seat

Remove the 5 nuts. Remove Cap. MAKE NOTE OF THE ARROW POINTING

You may want to vacuum the dirt that will be on top of the fuel tank.

To disconnect the fuel line there are two small holes that hold the blue clip in, once you release this clip you have 5 seconds or less till the fuel line pressure forces the line to separate from the fuel pump connection, so keep a hand on that connection and place towels around to absorb the gas that will pour out until the pressure is equalized.

The electric connection lift the latch up push the device towards the door

and then lift up once the notches look like this

Now to remove the locking ring you can take a hammer/mallet and a flat head screw driver and place it on one of the notches in the ring and nock it counter-clockwise to loosen it or if you have enough strength to loosen it with you bare hands by all means just remember righty tight, lefty loosey. Remove ring.

Pull the Fuel pump up SLOWLY so you do not damage the Fuel Level Float arm. Fuel will leak out of the bottom so have extra absorbing material ready. And remember to place a cover over the exposed fuel so nothing will get in it.

To reassemble just follow this non-expert guide in reverse.

How much did it cost? Does the factory maintainence schedule call for it to be replaced?

 

They said if you needed a fuel pump replacement it would be a $1200 repair. I did not ask about warranty coverage or the maintenance coverage. I think the part it self is $300 or more.

 

The cost for the dealer to replace the fuel pump is $1200 in my area. The part is at least $300. I did not ask if it is covered under the warranty or maintenance plan that BMW/MINI offer, since my car is over 67K miles and bought it used. Just wasted a Saturday morning finding out that the filter does not get replaced unless the pump goes out. I am returning the $52 fuel filter.

 

Thanks. I did not recall seeing any mention of the fuel filter in the maintainance schedule and I thought maybe I had missed something.

Did your pump go bad? Seems like low mileage for a fuel pump to die.

 

Mine had to be replaced this week at 8000 miles. Was driving on the freeway and the engine just stopped. The tech who worked on my car said that it's a very common repair on the CM.

 

Yep! Mine failed when the car was 2 days old, and unfortunately my car had to be towed to the dealer twice before they figured out what the problem was.

 

No it didn't go out, just thought the filter needed to be replaced.

I'm just attempting this now on my daughter's Countryman. What is the easiest way to release that blue clip? I've been poking and prodding and am afraid of breaking it.

 

my friend I wish I could remember. I traded it in may of 2015 for an F55. But if I am thinking of the blue clip you’re referring to, it’s with you press down as hard as you can and pull it buy one of those tools that makes pressing the button a lot easier. Or if it’s a clip take a smallest flat heat you have and help move the clip in the unlock direction. I wish I took pictures when I did this so long ago.

I managed it with two very tiny flat head screw drivers. If this doesn't solve my problems it looks like the high pressure fuel pump is next.
