Coil Springs v Rubber Suspension Cones
Coil Springs v Rubber Suspension Cones
Hey!
One of my rubber suspension cones needs replacing (my Mini is currently set up with hi-lo's and the Spax adjustable shocks); has anyone swapped these out for coil springs? If so, what's the durability and the ride like in comparison? And what coil springs did you get? (Cushy, heavy duty, competition?)
I usually do one big road trip a year in this car (it's a '74 and last year the big road trip was 6,100 kms to give you an idea) and several small trips as well so it'd be nice to not to feel like all my teeth are going rattle out on the long hauls
; at the same time, I still want it to handle and corner well, etc.
Thank you in advance for your feedback!

I went round and round on this on my 1980 Clubman Estate, the rubbers were shot.....so I needed to do something.
I'd been told the rubbers that were currently being supplied were crap and wouldn't last so I looked at springs.
My info was there were two grades of springs available - Red - which were too harsh for street use, and blue - which were too soft.
Then I found a place in England that sold black ones, which were supposed to be similar to the cones and medium compared to the other colors - that's what I bought.
Note that the hilo's that work on cones will not work on springs. That said, I bought springs and hilo's all around for about what it costs for 4 rubbers.
So far I'm really happy with them, I've done about 5K miles on them and I have had to adjust them up twice, but they seem to have stabilized now. Ride quality is great and in spirited driving I find no issues with the handling, tho this car is not driven on track.
FWIW.
