1380cc Engine and RPMs
Hello!
I just bought a '74 Mk3 with a 1380cc engine in it. Does anyone know the optimal RPM to run this at on the highway? It's a 4 spd. Redline starts at 5,500 and ends at 7,000. It's a new motor - only 3,000 km on it so far.
Seems happiest around 35-3,800 which is approximately 90-95 km/hour. (I say approximately because the speedo is intermittent at the moment.) I can't find any details on this online though, so I wanted to check in here.
Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Typically I go with 2/3 of the redline to be safe while cruising. In your case that's about 3,700 with a 5,500 redline. I have my redline set at 6,000 on my 1275 that's been oversized by .020, so 4,000 would be my rpm goal.
Hi..It all depends on what type of camshaft you have and head size.....My 1380cc is built by Swiftune and has an SW5 cam fitted it has a great torque range from 2000rpm to 6000rpm and its 100bhp @ 100torques....I have clock out at over 100mph in England......
I asked this question YEARS ago
and trust me, the answer is NOT in the owner's manual
"I have my redline set at .... '
My modified 1275 runs really happy around 4000 .. I SET my tach to a 6500 red line.
but I NEVER push it ..... it is a toy / show car
