Is it totally impossible to get air conditioning in a classic mini?

The only AC in any of my classics was rolling down the windows. If you have the rear windows that "pop" out, you get some nice flow-through ventilation.

Check out gomini.com. They have AC as an option on their custom v-tech minis.

There are a few companies that make bolt-on kits ranging from $1,800 to $4,000. Very few Minis came with a/c and I believe that they were for the Japanese market only.

Classic Minis have BMC A-series engines, ranging from about 800cc to about 1275 cc. In all honesty, this is too small an engine for effective A/C generation, especially in the radiator/cooling capacity dept. The car was not designed for A/C, its ventilation system is too crude, and most have sliding rather than wind up windows. Get a classic Mini with the webasto canvas sunroof and the sliding windows. It will perform fine and you'll never miss the A/C.

Look into Hot Rod companies. I hear for the right price there are many AC options.

I have A/C AND a Webasto, (Mayfair Ltd.Ed. Japanese specs) the air works very nicely and the only difference in performance is from a stoplight, it's slower up until about 20mph, then it feels normal, even passing feels fine, but it's really cramped up front though.

It get's VERY hot & muggy where I live and I'm a heat weenie, but with the roof open, windows down and the back windows popped it's perfect most of the time, yesterday it was 98 deg. and it came in handy.
has never ran hot, even in traffic.

Um I have to argue, that bottom picture seems quite hot.

Well if you notice how short her skirt is, and she is in front of the A/C vents, so the breeze up her skirt kept her nice and comfy

Comfy perhapse, but still hot.

No offense intended, just pleasant on the eyes a tad more that that Mini and that Mini is sweet.

I will also need to look into an AC, as I am spoiled and well I sweat in my MINI already, in my Mini I may well liquify.

Afraid I'll have to side w/ Xanthus on this one!!! We don't have any AC'd Minis around here, but one or two have the Webasto sun roof (not as well appointed at yours though, Manuel). Nice unit!

Check with Mini shops here in England. The 1997 and later 1275 Mini's have A/C as an option. I am sure some of the junkyards here have used ones. They should be a bolt-on option as the Austin block remained the same, just bored over by Rover.

Kesh has a good idea, since the compressor & brackets were factory items they could be found and retro-fitted, and probably improved on with newer tech these days, the A/C and heat are two separate systems, so it doesn't help on defrost.

Or since jds is in Texas he could cruise over to Vintage Air and see what they could do, http://www.vintageair.com/

Thanks for the compliments, car and Tasha

I am going to the Mini World Show 2005 Tomorrow in Sandown Park UK...
www.miniworld.co.uk

MiniWorld is the main Mini magazine here in Europe and I work for the same publishing company and know the editor, Monty Watkins very well. We exchange notes daily, as I too, am a mini freak.

I will have a look for you and then PM you on what I find.

Warmest Regards,

Kesh

I'll have Dion look into it. I have to get my grubby paws on one before I can get AC in it.

MiniWorld Show 2005. UK

The MiniWorld show was super cool. Kinda like heaven for mini buff.

Check out this company...http://www.minispeed.co.uk/

The guy's name is Steve, he has a few ideas for A/C and will be able to point you in the right direction.

If anyone would like pics from the show, send me an email and I will email them directly.
