Hi all --

I spent a few hours mounting my fire extinguisher in my Mini. I debated whether to mount it under the passenger side of the dash or just in front of the driver's seat. I opted for the driver's seat option. It's a little more 'in your face', especially with the red extinguisher, but I want it to be accessible very easily when I'm on the track.

I bought the bottle, billet mount and billet bottle clamp from Summit Racing. I secured the mount to the cross member with 10-32 aluminum rivnuts. I think it turned out great. It's one of those things that I hope I never have to use.

Wow, I really like that. My bottle is attached to the carpet (!) by the PO. Does the bulkhead/crossmember have any exposure to the outside of the car? If not, I'm gonna copycat you!

BUT

If you don't know if the cross member has exposure .... welllllll, you may have some significant rust chasing to do . . .

p.s. I'm a car show guy and some 'sanctioned' car shows require an extingisher

I have a 94 show car with low miles, no rust. I haven't even been under it, it runs like a top.

Now I was just wondering if that area was boxed in, that’s all. I didn’t want to go lift my lowered car or poke a drill bit through vs just asking!

{The crossmemeber holds the seat brackets and has the correct shape on the bottom to sit correctly on the floor of the rod change tunnel only. This is the complete section from inner sill one side to the other.
Fits all square type floor tunnels and was only fitted to rod change cars as opposed to the round type 14A9533 which fitted Mk1/2 and early MK3}

 

The cross member does a few thing, but it's mainly there to increase shell ridgidity. As capt_bj said, it's just a box ... enclosed on three sides in the cabin and enclosed on the fourth by the floor pans. Mine has a few holes from cancer here and there. My next big project will be to replace the floors and cross member. I'll take some pictures when I'm in there for you
