Towing a Classic

I'm buying a classic which already has tow hooks in the front for a towbar and I have a 4wd SUV more than capable of towing the classic.

Assuming no traffic incidences along the way, will it damage the classic to tow it for 500 miles? It's a std, so it will be in neutral and I can probably use something to depress the clutch to be doubly certain I'm not cranking the engine/transmission.

I want to examine the classic personally and once I've gone that distance, I'd just as soon haul it home with me.

Problems?

I have flat towed mine with no damage...since the gear train is already sitting in oil, not an issue....from a differential point of view...there are some good websites that address flat towing....in fact, a close search of this site will probably bring back some hits

The image worked for me, BTW.....

A number of folks here have flat towed their Mini, just leave the key in the ign so the steering won't lock (assuming it has that feature) and make sure it's in neutral....

another good point...you want the steering wheel to move a bit, but sometimes it can move too much and "click" to a full turn when not really desired.....I have always used my seat belt to hold it mostly center, but allow it a little wiggle room so you don't drag the front wheels around the turn...it has always worked well...I experienced the "click" over to full turn status going out of my driveway on an early trip and realized that needed to be addressed...
