Problem with engine ID number
Problem with engine ID number
Hello everyone, im a first time post and forgive my ignorance but i have a bit of a problem, i have a 1972 1100 (1098) mini, but aparently the Engine identification plate is missing, i know it should be beside the water pump, well close by on the block, is there anywhere else i can find the id number for this engine, the problem is here where i live all license plates have been changed and in order to renew them they have to check the motor number which i cant find, and if not available what could you recomend.. i really apreciate any help you can provide.
Regards, Lawrence

There's probably some casting numbers stamped into the back of the block which may point you to the type of engine. Theres not going to be a full id number though. I had a similar problem in which my engine has a tag but its not the correct one. This writeup was helpful: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/engine/mgenginehistory.rtf
The ID plate is roughly 1/2" x 2" and is reversed stamped and riveted to the top of the block on the right front side. You'll see a small flat landing there.
You can still buy the plates & rivets
If you knew what the original number was (available from British Motor Heritage) you can order a new plate up & install it. Your number would've started 10XXXx

I think MiniMail or Nick at Min-e-bitz in the UK does them or can put you on to someone who does.

Or, you can go to Harbor Freight and buy a number punch set and stamp the block yourself.
