1971 Innocenti Mk3, what engine do i have

I just bought a 1971 innocenti Mk3 Mini Cooper. I am doing some research on what kind of engine it has. I believe it is the 1275 but not sure. Here is a picture of it.

thanks,

bobby

Hi..Bobby your engine should have a NO: stamped onto a plate fitted to the top of the block this should start with 12h if 1275cc and check back of engine, does it have tappet chest covers if so just below the right by rad there should be another plate this should have 1275 stamped on where modern petrol pumps fit............

The position of the heater control valve on the top of the cylinder head indicates it is not a 1275cc. The engine tag appears to still be on the block. A number from that tag will tell us a lot!

The morris # on the engine is 9FJXX-H12976. Just got home with it, and it hits the road unbelievable. Cruises at 65-70 with ease. Kind of why i think it might be the 1275 cause it has all kinds of power. Car was only about 20 minutes away from me. I went to look at it, and bought it. All original, and probably the best looking stock one ive seen. So far it seems like it is going to a great car. Everything seems to work on it perfect.

Looks like a 998 according to this book "Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S, the restorers guide," John Parnell
It also says that version of the 998 puts out 60 bhp which is why it probably feels like it has some guts.

Google had a preview of the book where you can see the section on the 9fj engine.

Done some more research it does have the 998. I got a view from behind the engine and could see the tappett covers. Its raining here right now ill get some more pics later. I'm working on getting the hydrolastic suspension back up to hight. I built a pump out of a greese gun. I will post a reply after the results.
