Engine ID?

Hello all -

I've read a few engine ID how-tos but none of them have answered my question.

So my best guess is that it reads 12C/DA/H29265. I'm not sure if the negative-relief D is significant or if the slightly-different-font A is significant either. All I really know is that it is a 1275 non-S and has an HS4 with an AAU needle for the time being.

Can anyone shed more light or do I know everything I can know from this engine code? Thanks!

Cardinal sin of forum-ing... replying to one's own post.

I know it is an A series not an A+ by the 2-bolt dizzy clamp...

I figured out that the distributor is a 25D 41220 which apparently is from an Austin America? The engine tag still doesn't check out. Apparently it is supposed to be a "12H" if it is a transverse mount application. WTF? Is it possible it was a longitudinal engine converted to transverse?

Maybe the C is for Canadian the last part is just a serial number and the H is for High compression I think at least in the position it is in.. but you are right.. cant find a C after 12 in any of the codes I see online.

I found that MG Midget engines have a 12V block. Perhaps it is V for vertical and H for horizontal?

Where is the car from? Australia? NZ? Is that the original engine color?

The car is Canadian-market and it is not the original engine. It was purchased independently of the car from a pair of Canadian guys, but I have no idea if the engine itself is actually Canadian or not. I am not sure if it is the original engine color, but it appears to have been painted "tractor style" (assemble complete engine then paint as one unit).

Try this write up I found. It covers most of the A series engines throughout all of the cars that use them. www.mgcars.org.uk/engine/mgenginehistory.rtf

maybe it's a replacement engine plate and someone made a typo when making it and decided to add the D afterwards? the /'s seem a little odd
