Firewall Sheet Metal

Where can I find a breakdown on what the right side of the firewall should look like?

And where to get, what I need to repair it?

I discovered the other day when I got caught in the rain that I got water spray off the front wheel in my face. Closer examination allowed me to see daylight to the fender well/tire.

'78 1000.

Any direction is most appreciated...

Steve

www.m-machine.co.uk has breakdowns of most of the different panels. I think this is the section you are referring to.

You mean that's not supposed to happen? I kind of find it humorous that I can see my driver's side tire (LHD) through the air vent while driving. I guessed I just assumed it was just a feature.

I guess I'll have to look around as well and find out what mine's missing.

Cheers,
Jeff

It likely just needs a hose - there's a duct that runs from right behind the front grille, up inside the wing, and then connects to that vent. Really high-tech, lemme tell you. Mine's missing on the LH side as well - I need to measure the on on the right side to buy some. Should cost about $5.

Theres some sort of vent hole through the firewall that may have a hose or in the case of mine a plate to block it off.

Take a picture of where your hole is or explain it better. I just did a repair on mine a few weeks ago in the same area and maybe can help if it's similar to your rust problems.

The air intake for the heater comes into the cabin at the rear of the front right wheel housing.

There is also a fresh air vent up at the top. Often there is a rusty hole above where the fresh air vent mounts. Mud and debris get caked up there and hold moisture. Pull off your interior air bezel, vent and dash cards to look behind for rust. (above the parcel tray)

In the following picture you can see the plastic heater vent (wrapped in tape/paper) and the fresh air vent tube behind it. See the two bolts? Rust forms up in there...Also, if your big tube (4" or so) is off or has holes, water can come in through the heater vent..

Where's the hole?

I doubt you want to replace the entire firewall! ugh....

If your hole is down low near where the floor kicks up you can probably get away with a simple patch...I cut out old and put in new down there for this very reason. Depending on the size of the bad area you can either use simple flat stock, or buy a replacement floor pan. You may not need the entire pan, but can easily cut it down.

I just got a sale flier from 7, pans on special this month:

Floor Panels. These aftermarket panels are a better option than Rover's product.
BHM0009E right front now $33.25
BHM0010E left front ), now $33.25

There are also repair panels for the lower portion of the wheel well (inner fender panel repair sections) as Cp'n BJ suggests. These fix the portion of the panel below (at the bottom of the panel referred to previously)

See Item H below. [Item G fixes the referenced area I mentioned previously]
