What type of clutch fluid to use?

I'm working through a clutch adjustment issue and have been bleeding the hydraulic system. Can I use DOT3, DOT4. or DOT5 fluid with these hydraulic systems or do I need to actually buy the Unipart 410 or 550 brake fluid as specified in the factory service manual?

As wierd as this sounds, I *think* the previous owner was using Zenith damper oil for clutch fluid.

Oh, and the clutch is pre-verto.

Thanks for any help!
Jeff

I don't know anything about clutches but I use DOT 4 brake fluid for my brakes (you mentioned brake fluid in your post...)

Castrol LMA is generally considered the "default" brake/clutch fluid for older cars. Mainly because it doesn't react badly with the natural rubber seals that many British hydraulic systems use/used.
