Budget carpet set question...

hey guys - has anyone installed the "budget" carpet set from GBcarparts? I have two pieces I can't figure out...

here's what I have:

The two smallish pieces just aft of the skinny door sill covers (one is right above the "GB Cars LLC" copyright letting)... are they to cover the bottom of the rear pockets or something? I can't figure out where they're supposed to go...

Also, I had assumed that the strip pictured in the image above at the REARMOST position was, in fact, a footwell piece intended for the lower firewall (behind the heater box), but it it actually to line the space under the rear seat or something? I have a strip of gray carpet up under the dash board in there now, that's literally slotted through the heater box brackets that I was thinking of just leaving in place (since it would be such a PITA to remove), but if that strip is INTENDED to be put in the rear then I guess I'll definitely be leaving it alone.

Thanks in advance!

The small pieces are for the ends of the crossmember that runs under the seat fronts. Note the angle cut should match the slope of the inside of the sill. They get glued into place.
The other piece is for the lower firewall as you guessed. There isn't a seperate piece for the rear. The heelboard (under the rear seat) is exposed metal painted body color.

The pieces are to cover the ends of the crossmember under the seats.

The rightmost piece indeed fits behind the heater box. The heater emoves easily. Two front screws and then lift it off the metal brackets in the back.

I installed that set in my car. Good value but the set requires a lot of trimming and fitting. The backseat ashtray- the floor mounted one -took a lot of planning to make sure the hole I made in the carpet was in the right spot. You'll also want to get some floor mats as the carpets aren't all that hard wearing.

Do you recommend glueing the underlay to the carpet? And would you glue the underlay to the car? I was thinking about trying double sided tape.

Obviously, with some of the pieces you have no choice but to glue them in. In my '76 the carpets were glued to the sound absorbing mat and then glued into the car. I'm repainting the car and will probably ruin the carpet trying to get it all out. At least the sound mat will be toast. I'm going to try to install the floor pieces without the glue for the rebuild but I don't know the carpets will move around without it. American iron has door thresholds and other fasteners at the perimeter to help hold the carpet in place. There's nothing like that on a mini.

I need to get a set of the horsehair-like felts for under the carpet - all that was in there were a set of weird, rubber-like liners. That seems like a bad idea... Anything that traps moisture = rust, after all.

I'll probably glue the carpets in eventually, but for right now I just plan to set them in place - I'll need to pull them out to do the weld fix after all.

As for the heater, are you SURE it just pulls out? Mine has two VERY long threaded bolts in the back with nuts on the end, but I can't see if those bolts are through holes or are dropped into clips (I can't get my head back there and the heater unit will drop down in front when I remove the screws but will not move forward no matter how I pull on it... grrr).

I can't even SEE the RH side bolt because there's a fat ribbed hose blocking it. Plus there are two rubber hoses gasket-clamped to the side. Basically there are like 67 hoses coming off it, only 2 of which seem easily removable...

Carpet: I glued the pieces requiring it (fenders, crossmember, etc) left the floor pieces unglued. They will get wet eventually and you'll need to pull them to dry them out or else have a mildew smell.

All Mini heaters have 2 screws at the front. Remove them & the heater front drops down. The long threaded rod in the back simply slides down into 2 metal slots that hold the back of the heater up. Other than that there's the 2 hoses to disconnect if you wish & the wiring to the fan. If you remove it completely, take it out & backflush the rust & debris out of it. The big ribbed hose is the fresh air intake. There will be 2 smaller (2") ribbed defroster hoses also.

I assume you've removed your seats? That makes it all much easier.

Hi All,
I just bought that same set and was surprised by two things:

1. A hole has to be cut for the shifter.
2. The crossmember under the front seats doesn't get covered.

Or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ah, gotcha. That's what I figured.

Looks like on the deluxe kit you still have cut your own shifter hole, no?

my heater has four screw holes. I have to take all four nuts off then the heater slides off the screws. It is very hard to see, some people take a seat out to get a better angle for under the dash.
