Upgraded/Aftermarket seats that fit in the classic Mini

Possible sticky?

People have been asking about replacement seats in their Classics, so here's a GUIDE I found over on TheMiniForums.co.uk.

Hope it helps! Me - I like the look of those Rover 220's...

you tend to lose easy rear access with most of the seats......just so you know....(cant tilt them forward because of there size)

Here are some pics of my new seats. They are very nice to sit in and my kids can still crawl into the back seat. I would like to change the interior from gray to black.

Here it is. Color is definitely way off-the interior is BLACK with dark grey highlights. Seats are from a 1999 Honda Prelude. They are sooo comfy and make a road trip in the Mini the mutt's nutt's! With some work, you can fit the rear cushions also to have a complete matching interior.

Unfortunately you gotta deal with what's available here in the US. That means Honda (Prelude, Civic Si), Mazda (Miata), or similar small car or aftermarket. The issue to fitting is the width of the seats especially the seat back. Take a look at the distance between your rear side bins which limit rearward travel and reclining. You have to work around that. You also will need to make/purchase some mounts.

Cobra or Corbeau

Cobra and Corbeau seats are available widely and have a mount that bolts right in

I've classic Cobra's....low back and very raked back. With the mount they flip up for rear access

In BJ's photo above, on the right you can see where the rear bin would interfere with some wider seat mountings....

widths

i've seen some suppliers who actually carry them in multiple widths

I'm a 40 waist right now....

7 says only upto a 36 for their Corbeau versio...

Description: The Classic Bucket is the perfect "vintage/classic style" bucket seat. It is ideal for classic cars, trucks and kit-car applications. Standard features include: tubular steel frame, injection molded foam, an adjustable headrest and custom vertical stitching along the center of the seat. The Classic Bucket will fit up to a 36" waist.

MiniSport has no such warning, but a wider selection

Hey Capt bj,

Any idea if your Cobras sit lower (seat cushion height) than the OEM mini seats they replaced? I'm considering either Cobras or Corbeaus for my mini pickup with hopes of lowering the seating position so I'm not looking out of the top two inches of the windshield. One challenge I'm finding though, is that I can't find any to test out. I'd hate to order them, pay for shipping, then find that they mount in and have the same cusion height...

Which begs one more question... If you can lower the seat cusion "ride" height, would the steering wheel position be horribly high (even after using the column lowering bracket?).

Honestly, I've never driven a Mini w/out these seats! These were in the one I bought. However, as a 6 foot even person, my perception is that they MUST be lower....I've a good 6 inches 'tween me and the roof.

Which begs one more question... If you can lower the seat cusion "ride" height, would the steering wheel position be horribly high (even after using the column lowering bracket?).
I've the lowering bracket and a 10" steering wheel. The wheel height it OK and the reach to the wheel is my only *****. With the Cobras all the way back in their mounts I'm pretty much straight armed to the wheel which after an hour or two causes an old fart some pain.....

For your pickup I'd be VERY concerned about fit as the serious rake of the Cobra seat backs means they have a 'long dimension' ..... follow me? I lost my back seat cuz the seat rake means my head is IN the back seat. A P/U doesn't have that space....

Check the 7 Enterprises site for their dimension specs (which I have NOT verified)

By rake are you saying the seat back is in a "reclined" position? I'm 5'11" and (weird enough) I like sitting in a reclined fashion with the seat cushions adjusted pretty far forward, which is why I think the Cobras/Corbeaus might work in a pick-up, as I don't mind cramped leg room (bent legs as opposed to straight legs). I have LOTS of room in a mini saloon, but pickups are snug. Standard mini seats are ok, but I tend to sit too upright and have to hunch over the wheel like you do in chop-top '32 Ford street rod. Everyone knows that feeling, right? Ok, maybe not.

cloth corbeau sport seats= very nice! One of the drawbacks to cobra or corbeau classics is that they're vinyl... I haven't had a vinyl seat in 20+ years. The thought of sweaty, slippery vinyl during hot Kansas City summers--yuck! I must be going nuts to consider vinyl...
