I built a set of speaker pods over the weekend, which I'll be mounting in the cabin soon. The once I made call for the pods to be mounted through the sheet metal of the inner wheel arch, so I want to seal the resulting hole against corrosion.

The How-to calls for "underseal" to be applied to the bolt and all around the hole, but where do I get this and what is it called in the USA?

FYI - I'll use carriage bolts, attached to the body with a standard nut and then use a wing-nut inside the speaker pod itself - that way I can easily remove them when doing things like checking under the carpet. I'll use titanium of stainless hardware for this, so that the fittings don't corrode.

Since it will be unseen, why can't you use something like spray undercoat or better yet, roof patch (tar-like in a caulk tube). That stuff is impervoius to water (obviously, needs to be). Roof patch is a good idea... I found a spray can of some kind of rubberized stuff, but it's meant to go on bare metal - I'll try that first and see if it adheres properly - if not, I'll go up to the big-time caulk. Thanks!

 

One word for undercoat sealant = Waxoyl

The best for this application would be the Hardwax. Made in Switzerland available here

I'd treat the hole and bolt with a rust encaspulator, either eastwood's or POR-15 then apply undercoat over that IF you have undercoat in the wheel well already.

WAXOIL is the traditional rust preventive but it is dated technology. It remains a good product to spray into body cavities (like the old Zebart days) but for the underside and wheel wells its property of remaining 'sticky' just means it holds dirt.... it reminds me of cosmoline.

I steam cleaned it off the entire underside of mine and stripped the rubber undercoat in the wheelwells to see what I had. Chased a little hidden rust then gave it all a good coat of POR .... 'course the car seldom sees much dirt or rain anymore.

OTOH I've know plenty of folks to use spray on bed liner in similar applications....

Try truck bed liner. I used Herculiner (brushable) under the wagon and on the floorboards and its is tough & waterproof. I got it at Pep Boys.
