Tire Question...

Hey, is it ok to have three of one...yeah right!

No, the question is: I have Kuhmo Super High Performance Summer tires on my car, what is the coldest weather I should be driving in? The car is being put away for the winter at the end of October, but I want to do the Starved Rock run on the 29th. I will keep the car in the garage all night to keep the tires warm, but will this be ok driving in what may be fairly chilly weather?

Thanks,

Blake

air temp is not an issue for "summer" tires, the issue for you is wet pavement. That will only slow you down. Thats my 2 cents.

I don't know what compound you have but I have run MX's in the snow. I
don't recommend it, and it can be done.

Dustin, I know, I won't be driving in front of you for the run! I have the Kumho ECSTA SPT, this tire is rated as excellent in the wet. It is the cold I am worried about. I won't be driving in the snow, I hope! Just till the end of this month.

I'd just go for broke and not worry....

Have you tried emailing Kumho directly or looking at their site for info about minimum operating temps for that tire?

In that case... I'll stay behind both of you

Thats why, we are going to have two packs of MINIs, one pack for Type A drivers and one pack for Type B drivers, fair and safe.

i run summer tires all year long on my weekend cars (i don't swap them
out as i don't drive them in the snow or wet weather) and i found that
S03's start to loose grip around 55F, GS-D3's around 45F but as long
as you keep some margin on your turns and driving input, you're fine.

just don't do any sprited drives with your summer tires in cold temps
and use at least all season tires for winter driving.

i like to take my cars out once in a while in the winter time on a
dry day.

I don't have any first hand experience, but I've also heard the 45 degree F number thrown around as the low point on ultra-high tires.

Have any of you guys changed up the tire size to have more of a tire selection? I run the 16' rims and the stock tire size is 195 55 16 which only a couple companies make. Tire rack says you can go to a 205 50 16 which give you alot more tires to choose from. Anyone done this yet?

Thanks Kenchan, I just did a search and saw all the ranting and raving over tire questions. Holy cow do people like to voice their opinions about nothing.

Question regarding tires

Sorry for interupting this particual discussion topic,

I have stock 205/45/17R goodyear tires that are run-flat all season. When you guys switch for perfomance tires, are they run flat or do you buy the regular one. If you buy regular ones where do you keep the spare tire? ,being the car being so small) lol

I went with non run-flats. No spare. A can of fix-a-flat is my kit. I am going to get a small compressor too. I guess I should get a spare.

where are you going to put the spare? I just got new tires and was told that using fix-a-flat, would void the tire warr. Just an FYI, compressor is good.

Spare will go in the back seat. On longer trips only. I will use the hope method all the time!!!

This has been about my experience with my Goodyear Eagle H1 215/40/17s. In the dry I lose some grip under 70 and have already adapted to giving myself far more run off room and taking corners much slower, under 70+wet and I'm basically ice dancing. So if its dry I don't think you'll have much issue just make sure you keep room to travel if the car decides it doesn't want to stick.
