Insurance

I'd like to know what insurance companies people are using here in Canada. My current company lists the Mini Cooper S that I just bought in the same class as a 911 with the keys left in the ignition and doors open.

I'm told my premiums are high ($120/month) due to the high cost of repair, high theft rate, etc

I'm looking for a better deal without giving up everything.
Currently i have $1000 deductable and $1mil liability

Thanks

Actually, that's not bad. In BC, we're stuck with ICBC. About $2100 per year. That's just under $200/month even with 40% off for decades of safe driving.

HOWEVER, last year, when I was in to get some vandalism fixed, I've been told that they have never had a claim for a stolen MINI. Seems the encoded key and other safety things have done the MINI good. MINIs (especially in Canada) are considered premium (aka expensive) cars.

Hi theft rate ? Something different about Canadian MINIs ? Everything I've ever read and been told our US spec MINIs says they are one of the toughest vehicles to steal.

What gives up there in the frozen tundra ?

In BC I pay $1230 per year. That's ICBC with full "safe driver" discount, $2 mil liability, $300/$300 collision/comprehensive deductibles.

Theft rate??? Short of putting mine on a flat bed and hauling it away I can't see how you could steal my car. I have comfort access and the thing has more friggin' embedded computers/networks/fibre optics than the space shuttle! I highly doubt it would be possible to get the engine to run without an authorized key-fob allowing it to do so.

Do you get an age discount on your insurance in B.C. I'm in the over 50 crowd,

I'm with Meloche Monnex (TD Insurance) and pay $1,000 per year and about $300 deductible with full coverage (glass, umbrella coverage). I find this insurance company to be really good with rates as they provide association discounts (university alumni, engineering, dental, medical, etc.).

! i'm about to be robbed!

WOW - I'm under 30 but perfect driving abstract (not THAT much under 30) i was quoted a cooper hard top (09) assuming a value of $27K at $2232/year!

They quoted me a Honda Fit (09) assuming a value of $23K at $2209/year.

When i asked how vehicles that were that different in value could be priced so closely they said that it was because they were small vehicles that would be clobbered and destroyed if they were in an accident. I used to be with Meloche Monnex.. Now i'm with Coseco through a Costco Employee Programme... HMMMMMMMM

Me too, with Meloche. Great rates and service.

Don't forget that age, location and driving history count the most for your rate. Also, the Cooper is classified as a Sports Car (3 doors), but the Clubman is in the Family Car category (5 doors). So that counts too.

Having your car "Sherlocked" will also lower your rate.

Antiteft markings

http://www.sherlock.ca/en/index.html

There is more than one "provider" for this kind of service. Ask your insurance agent which they "support" (i.e. give you a rebate) and if you can get a rebate of some sort for the markings itself to be done.

My wife gets P.Eng group rates for us with them. The annual dues more than pays for itself in insurance savings. Before she got that designation she also had Univerisity of Toronto Alumni rates and while a decent discount it's nowhere are near as good as the P.Eng. Plus we have a multi discount with another vehicle and our house insured with them. I'm 37 and have one accident claim(weather related no charges laid) and have never had a ticket out side of a parking ticket of course.

I'm sure my rates would be similar to yours without this discount. I guess I should have said that in my earlier post. Sorry.

The Comprehensive rate for the cooper S is pretty high (34), compared to (27) for the cooper. Comprehensive covers theft, damage, etc. The OP seems to be getting a pretty decent rate for a copper S. I own a 2005 non-S Mini cooper and I pay about $125 / month (Farmers Mutual). My father is a broker (deals with many different companies) and I'm in the best rate group for my age, have a clean driving history (no tickets, accidents, etc.), and I have my business insurance with the same company. There are so many factors that go into how much insurance you'll have to pay (type of car, driving location, driving distance, age, maried, accidents, bundle discounts, etc.) I'll have to wait until I get married or turn 50+yrs old in order to get any additional price breaks. However, TD would likely be able to provide me with a competitive quote (association discount, etc.). One of these days I'll have to get a comparable quote in order to keep my father honest!! I would be much happier paying $1000 /yr.
