Has anyone camped here before? Nice area? How about Black Bears , any of them 'visiting' during the night?!

OK, now that I have set this topic up in flames with my post, here's the update I promised.

I was contacted by the lodge shortly after I posted here and they told me there was an error in the system and that my reservation request was cancelled and that I was 12th on the waiting list for the lodge.

I am still looking for other options like I am sure everyone is.

The main problem with the camp site is if the dam breaks . The camp sites are located at the bottom of the dam and there are a few critters in the area but I have not heard of any bears bothering anyone in that area, but then again it is a pretty remote area so you may have skunks, raccoons and the like.

Look on the bright side...it's a great place to get your very own Davey Crockett-style hat!

That would be fun but have a busy Fall and did get reservations at Microtel for Spring and still on waiting list for Fontana. Looks like you live around the corner and enjoy those NC roads all year long. One of these days I'm going to move out of grid locked Orlando.

Hi Pam,

It is a 4 hour trip (one way) from the house. I have driven up played for 2 hours and driven back in one day though.

It's that much fun? Can't wait! Thinking about going up a bit early so we can enjoy the area before everyone arrives....that is if the lodging works out. Have fun this Fall - I bet it is beautiful with the leaves changing.

Yep. It's that much fun. As long as you stay on the road.

I camped this year, and will be camping again next year, provided our plans hold and we can make it (wife too, this time!)

There are three campsites with covered picnic tables, electricity, and water hookups all in one central area. There may be others, but I know of those three. You could get 3 tents per site pretty easy. Last year I took an electric skillet and made breakfast for anyone who wanted to stop by, and there are grills there for cookouts if you aren't eating at one of the official 'events'.

I don't have a campsite reservation but I plan to share a site with someone who is at one of those three, and make breakfast again next year.

Camping is fun, the bathroom/shower is....a campsite bathroomshower. The weather is usually rainy but not too hot (the only thing that would make camping really suck is it being too hot) and it is a five minute drive to the main Fontana village area.

It seems more of the hardcore partying goes on at the village, and us campers kept it more 'reasonable' last year.

I hope to have my little guy back from the Mini hospital, in time for the Fall run. Da%m, DPSM shorted out again--five plus weeks in the shop--seven trips to a dealer, all in the last year. Today it could not decide if it was a english teapot or a Tommy Gun, at up to 128db and no way to make it stop it is awful.

Yeah but what about all the sand and rocks that would come down if it broke .
