It's usually around the same time every year...first weekend in May. You can find information on the past events on this website. Go ahead and make your hotel/motel/cabin reservations though, because they book up fast. See you next year!!!

I look forward to MOTD07... Can't wait.

As for ideas, why not set a poll up for some of the NEW ideas to be voted on...oh, well i guess there is plenty of time for that really.

Love the swap meet idea!!

IDEA: Have you ever heard of a "cook-n-run"? (i think that is what they are called) Hotrodders have done them, you prepare a small meal, usually wrapped in alum foil, and place it in a designated safe place under the hood to cook, then go for a drive, (i.e. motor) then you stop to eat your engine cooked meal. Yes it must be done correctly as to not cause a hazard or a mess... best of all MINIUSA can't void your warrenty if you eat the evidence!!

First time I ever heard of that as some type of motoring/social event! Those of us who work on the railroad have been known to use this method using the locomotive diesel engine to heat up our supper. (Be sure to open cans as they tend to explode, then your locomotive smells funny for a while. )

Isn't it the first weekend in May? They usually open it up for registration a month or two before.

i have never attended a MOTD and look forward to doing so this year.

i do have a suggestion or two for anyone that has the time and knowledge. perhaps another thread would help out alot.

1. a listing of possible places to stay would be most helpful to us newbies. thats of course, if there isnt a thread devoted to this yet. fontana seems to be the hot spot but, i know its booked up. any other good ones?

2. some of us lowered people (meaning mini is lowered) would like to know the lay of the land as far as ground zero is concerned. dirt roads, parking lots with huge speed bumps etc. are there any worries?

cool. thanks

1. I stayed at Fontana and loved it. Apparently they go in and out of having availability, so just keep trying. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else as it is the center of most of the activities and it was just too convenient to walk everywhere. I believe that Fontana has a waitlist, so sign up on that but keep calling back every 2-3 weeks. For alternative places to stay, look back at the info for the 2006 Dragon. Several places were listed there.

2. I don't remember there being any insurmountable speed bumps that you couldn't drive around. There were some very low MINIs present and I didn't see any problems. I also noticed several carbon fiber front lips... those tend not to like speedbumps as well.

All of the roads were paved. The Dragon has several pull-offs along the route (a large one at the end farthest from Deals Gap to stop and cool your brakes before the return trip) that were compacted dust gravel, so you would need to be very careful there.

I don't know the availability and cost of a portable dyno but I do know a shop in Knoxville that would likely be receptive to the idea. It would be about a 45 to 50 minute drive.

If we can get a decent group of people... 20 or so... then I can track down the portable.

The large lot you mentioned is next to Tabcat Bridge at the end of the Dragon. At Midnight on the Dragon, people meet there, pop their bonnets, and the headlights shine greetings to the space brothers and sisters.

Uh oh, just thought of something... For MidnightOTD '07, we should have a few R56's among us. What should/can they do?!?

Hmm, does MINI sell flashlights?

They'll have to watch the others flashing, I guess.

We did not announce that any of our events would have proceeds donated to charity because we really were not sure we would make any proceeds. We decided quite a while back that the vasty majority of proceeds would go to charity. And then we got bogged down and never picked one!

So, we plan to make a contribution to charity (most likely the Make a Wish Foundation, but we are still getting suggestions and have not decided) with the vast majority of any proceeds. We had hoped to annouce this at the farewell dinner, but as been said, the event was just taking way too long and I could not stomach holding people any longer. Once we know what we are doing we will post about it. Proceeds remaining go to pay our insurance policy and misc. club stuff and a thank you event to keep us going until the next Dragon. No one takes home money. We are not in this to make money -- we are in this to help put on a fun event for the MINI community nationally.
It has been over six months since this was posted. I'm still curious to know if DCMM contributed the excess proceeds (if any existed after paying the club's annual insurance policy and misc. stuff for the club) from the Dragon to anything other than the club's coffers?

As far as I know, except for DCMM, all other groups that collected funds gave anything left over to charity.

Yucca, the answer is not yet, but it was planned all along. We had a myriad of complications this year that prevented us from proceeding with our original intent. Your concerns are valid, but all I ask is to stay tuned, because we will finally be able to follow through very soon.

It may be crazy late (and yes we fully realize this), but will not be a meager or half-assed action.
