F56 Oil Change Procedures
Don't think you will ever get every drop of old oil out. If you think about it, the majority of professional done oil changes are done on a lift or over a pit where the mechanic is dealing with a level car. Would also depend on the location of the drain plug, is it dead center?
Bottom line = don't sweat the details on this.

I was talking to a coworker and he stated that he used to add a quart of oil while it was draining (or after it was drained, I can't recall) for the sole purpose of trying to get as much of the used oil out. I can't speak to how effective or useful this technique is, but that's a possibility if you are concerned about getting rid of as much residual oil as possible during the oil change.
Thanks for your response. I am concerned about getting as much of the old oil out as possible, but mostly so that I don't need to risk overfilling with the new unless I carefully measure how much of the old stuff was removed. I would, of course, like to end up with a very high percentage of "new" oil in the engine after the oil change.
I used to use magnetic drain plugs "back in the 80's" and chunks "of stuff" would adhere to it, would also sacrifice 1/2 quart or so to before draining was complete to grab any old oil, cars were all garbage back then, none of these OCD things worked.
Your car's probably still breaking in. If the shaving are concerning you, run an Oil Analysis -$30 Blackstone labs.

yep, looks normal for low miles and still in break in phase. How many miles are you at?

On our 2022 F57 JCW anyone know the amount of oil to use to fill for an oil and filter change? Seems like there are 2 different amounts even when ordering the oil change "kit" they talk about 2 different amounts.
Thanks.
Thanks.
It should be 5 1/2 quarts since the JCW and the S models should have the same oil capacity.
But you should make sure after filling since I only have a 2019 S and don't know the differences (if any) with the newer years.

3000 miles is too soon and you are literally wasting money.
needs to be reprogammed in the instrument cluster/ CBS section. You’ll need a good scan tool like a higher end Autel
or just pay attention to mileage

so on my last oil change i overtightened the oil filter housing plastic drain plug where one of the corners broke so the torx socket wont grip it anymore. whats the best way to get it out? or should i just get an entire new housing? lol
yea i had the housing out on my last oil change (before i put the oil in) but didnt have enough grip/leverage with the housing out to loosen the plastic drain. i was thinking of using one of those extractor drill bits but wasnt sure how well it would work on plastic
To be clear, the Oil Filter Housing Drain Plug is what you overtightened and broke, correct? I would just replace the entire housing. It's about $50. Then invest in a torque wrench that measures down to the 5Nm + 2Nm that you need to properly tighten this plug. Cheers .
Not a drill bit. Use an EZ Out extractor bit.
Drill a hole in the middle of the screw, insert extractor, and twist CCW.

Our beloved Mini's F56 oil sump tank is on a such a way designed (like most of the modern cars) that a few degrees upwards or downwards won't make an actual difference. Your lubricant will properly evacuated. However what will make (a small) difference is if you “list” the car to the left or right side.
In addition there is something really clever on B48 engine (speaking for the F56 series gasoline motors) and that's the way BMW set up the filtration element. Where every time you drain the oil from the filtration's element case, you are actually making a excellent oil drain of the "semi trapped" particles.
Last but not least,
Technical speaking, each time we are making an oil change, a 1/4 of the total oil amount remains inside the engine. It's really complicate to explain the reason for that
(unless someone if fully aware with the internal lubrication network, oil pump's non return and the "instant lubrication characteristics", in order to start with the analysis)
but that's a fact...
And that's another serious reason of why we must stick in one and only oil type/brand. I am apologizing for what I will say, but you really shorten your engine's lifetime if on every oil change you switch over between lubricants, even if they come from the same brand.
If you want to do so, there is a certain procedure for that.

Just an update, we have both pre 3/2020 design 51757343141 and post 3/2020+ design 51755A01569 underbelly pan replacement fabric piece. I have seen these get torn up from things on the road and bad oil changes (soaked in oil) and they tend to sag then drag on the ground on.

I did not see it listed anywhere in this FAQ but what is the required torque spec on the Oil filter and Drain plug.
I own both a 2013 S and 2019 S and would be interested in both. What is the Oil Capacity for both

" UPDATE: The amount of oil used in the F56 MCS is actually 5L (5.3 quarts) "
"I torqued the assembly to spec (18.4 ft-lbs). Then I torqued the drain plug to spec (14.8 ft-lbs)."
